"Old Lady" for EXS // 24 Bit Update (Long)

"Old Lady" for EXS // 24 Bit Update (Long)

2004-11-10 by mfalchook

Greetings,

This message is for those of you that had concerns about participating in the "Old
Lady" group buy, because the EXS version was only 16 bit. Several days ago, the
developer Michiel Post said this:

" The EXS24 version is currently shipping with 16 bit samples assigned to the
programs. The 24 bit samples are delivered on a separate DVD, so you can replace
them if you want to.
The reason why the EXS24 version is still called 16 bits is that we were faced with
some very strange behavior in the way that OSX and EXS24 handle the references
inside the EXS24 instrument files. In short, the references become corrupt when you
replace the 16 bit wavepool by the 24 bits samples. The Logic Project Manager and
Redmatica EXS Manager Pro were unable to resolve these reference problems. They
do work on my systems but when I transfer them to DVD and distribute these
instrument files other users experience problems. Some people reported bursts of
white noise. Some people had "samples not found" error messages etc. Some people
have no problems at all.
So my guess is that some OSX file classification operations are different for individual
systems and CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS. It looks like the cause of the references problem
is a hidden system catalogue that is created when files are written to an OSX hard
drive.
I did get reports that Redmatica's EXS Manager solves these issues for each individual
system but until we have a 24 bit version master DVD with instrument files that are
100% tested and working for all our customers I label the 24 bits version UNDER
CONSTRUCTION.
This situation should be solved soon, naturally. When we have 24 bit instrument
patches that work flawless on all systems we will upload them to our support-
sections as free downloadable updates.
So, we do ship the EXS24 version with both 16 and 24 bit samples but for now only
the 16 bits instrument files are fully operational."

But yesterday Michiel posted a new message:

" Update on the EXS24 version:
We have the 24 bits samples tested on 3 machines and so far no problems. We´re
going to test on a few more machines just to make sure. If this turns out to be stable
enough we´ll ship the 24 bits version only."

So the situation is improving. To stay abreast of everything related to the "Old Lady"
group buy (currently down to $120), stay tuned to:

I found that the white noise problem is rampant in OSX, especially when
pulling samples from CDs or changing things in the EXS. I had the same
problem with the White Grand. A workaround is simply change the sample
type, i.e. if it's a Wave or AIFF file, convert it to an SDII. Then the
problem disappears. For a large library, this could be a formidable task,
but there are programs like Sample Manager that can do bulk conversions
pretty efficiently. Then of course you have the reference change problem
once you change the file type. Any ideas for that Andrea? (Redmatica).

Best,
James

I just contacted Michiel: i'm sure we can make his library play
reliably...

Thanks Mark, that's exactly the info I wanted. Now I will go ahead and
order it.

I bought the PMI Consolidated Bundle and had the exact same problem with some of the pianos. I had to use the EXS manager to repair it along with an updated instrument from PMI.

[EXS] Sampled Piano=White Noise

2006-02-18 by james page

I recently installed both TBO and the White Grand
pianos from SampleTekk and they play beautifully.
However, I also installed the White Sister, using the
same procedure, and although the raw samples sound
fine, when I call up the piano in exs all I hear is
white noise on every note. In desparation I've tried
several different file structures for the instrument
file but always get the same result.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, JP

I too bought EXS manager and I've been using it for
hours but can't seem to fix this problem. Do you
remember which function of EXS you used?
Thanks, JP
