*new* Old Lady (giga 3) on EXS24???

*new* Old Lady (giga 3) on EXS24???

2005-03-03 by D. Bruce

Anyone had any luck getting the 24-bit giga3 version of the "Old
Lady" piano to run? I have had some very bizzare things happening,
like notes only playing on occasion, and only once in awhile.

(I did turn on virtual memory)

And while we're at it...
Has anyone noticed the stereo image problems with the old lady 16 bit
exs version.
There seems to be a problem with C#4 and D4 (an octave above middle C).
These notes sound strongly panned to the right.
You can see the waveform being much smaller on the left for C#4 and D4.
In fact there seem to be many inconsistencies with the stereo image.
Some notes sound nicely balanced, others sound like they are panned
slightly (mostly to the right) and some sound like the high frequencies
are louder on the right.

I like the sound of this piano but find it currently unusable due to
these inconsistencies. Shame.

I have contacted Michiel Post about it and he told me to re-install,
use the latest versions and then apply EXS manager, all of which did
nothing but waste my time. Since then he has ceased to reply to my
emails.

Tom,

Could it be that this is by design? The left end of the keyboard is
panned left and the right end (treble) is panned right, giving the
effect of sitting at the piano?

Absolutely not!
Inconsistencies are between individual notes, not a general motion.

Do you have it?
Take a look at some of the waveforms.

Is this the version that is specifically shipped for use with EXS, or is it
a Giga version that you're converting?

I can confirm. Some velocities (3 or 4) do go wrong in the notes you
mentioned. It sounds that one of the stereo channels is almost silent. I
have the giga version converted to EXS. Did not try it in Gigastudio
yet.

Mmm, Michiel Post should at least acknowledge this and correct it with a
service patch or something. I tried correcting it but it still sounds
unbalanced.

Is that the 16-bit GIGA that you converted to EXS or the GIGA3 24-
bit? I am trying to figure out if the 24-bit GIGA converts to EXS
and works ok (I have had no luck yet)

Thanks for confirming this. I'm really surprised that no one else has
noticed this. They did sell over 300 Old Ladies during the group buy.
Perhaps it would help if others wrote to Michiel as he has not
responded to my last email.

Hi Mark,

I have the GIGA2 and GIGA3 Version. It looks like the GIGA2 is the
16bit and the GIGA3 is 24bit. I tried the 24bit converted to EXS and
it behaved very strangely.

For those trying to reach Michiel Post, you might try
posting on the "northern sounds" website. I know he
frequents that group. JP

Or just contact him directly. You can find his email at the Post
Musical Instruments website.
Incidentally that's how I contacted him the last time and he has not
responded. At this point he has not acknowledged these problems with
the Old Lady. Considering the huge amount that was sold through the
group buy, I think it would be good to hear from him :)

I must confess, I bought Old Lady in the Group Buy, and thought
it was great - listening in speakers only. I never noticed this until
I saw this post, and sure enough, it's the same on my EXS24
version (16-bit version) with only the loudest velocities in the
middle for those two notes.

If the problem occurred during the recording process, I can
see why Michiel Post is reluctant to respond - how on earth
could he set up an identical recording situation with identical
mike placement etc. just to correct two notes? OTOH if it
didn't occur during recording, then he really ought to provide
a fix.
