EXS improvements in Logic 7.1

EXS improvements in Logic 7.1

2005-04-06 by Sonny Keyes

Tantalizing promises from the Apple site, snipped from the "Top 10
Reasons to Upgrade to 7.1":

"Create or edit EXS24 instruments more easily using rubber-band
selection of Zones and the ability to define Start Note and Width
settings when importingmultiple samples."

I wonder what else they've done to it..?

Maybe they've improved the sampling engine... it's just so bad
compared to the hardware samplers... yes, I still use the EXS because
it's more convenient. But the sound doesn't live up to the standard
of the other instruments and FX...

But I think no one seems to mind...

Cheers

I actually do.
Aliasing is pretty much of an issue with the EXS, as soon as you don't use at least one zone per tritone. Add some pitch shifting
and you'll need even more.

Kontakt (which I also own) is quite better in that aspect, but on the other hand, the EXS's LP filter IMO is still sounding just
great, especially on synth-like basses or squealing resonant stuff.

The E-mu hardware samplers used to have something called distortionless pitch
shifting which worked great. I'm not sure if their virtual samplers have this. I sure
wish the EXS had a similar algorithm.

I like the sound of the EXS filters but there is a bug with the LPF. If you listen to a
sample that has an LPF with the res set high, you will here a click (like a bad edit) at
the very end of the sample. Try this with a deep kick drum and you'll hear what I
mean.
