I might share the story behind the Rain Piano.
This piano was made in cooperation with Clavia who also uses this piano
to the Nord Electra, (SampleTekk makes the acoustic pianos to the
Electra).
Since we both have the copyright to the samples, we are allowed to use
the samples for our own commercial releases.
When recording the Rain Piano a Swedish upright from "Nordiska
Pianofabriken" was used.
At that time I listened a lot to Tom Waits "Mule Variations" and really
liked the pianosound on that CD.
So, I decided to attempt to do something in that line.
The name "Rain Piano" was suggested by Sven Bornemark, (the guy behind
"Groove Agent" and "Broomstick Bass"), when I told him about my idea.
"Oh, you want a piano that sounds like it's been out in the rain for a
couple of days", he said!
At the same session we also recorded a "normal" grand piano and I had
hired Jussi, the Finnish pianotech!
When I told him about my idea about him tuning the piano to produce more
overtones and sound a bit "ringy" without actually being out of tune he
became a bit nervous!
He had to consult some colleagues before he set about to actually
"detune" the piano to give it that "Waitish" sound. I guess it had
something to do with his pride as a craftsman!
What he did was to first tune the piano perfectly, and then very
slightly detune the mid string in the notes that has three strings.
We then worked a lot with different damping materials to make the piano
sound a bit more "scruffy".
The end result was something that I'm very happy with. It actually
became better then I expected.
I know a lot of people who plays live in big productions using the Nord
Electra who actually prefers the Rain Piano sound before the bigger
sounding grand patches because they feel that the Rain Piano adds so
much character to the sound and also doesn't take so much room in the
total sound.
There, the story behind the poroduct!
