"Old Lady" Update for EXS

"Old Lady" Update for EXS

2005-04-13 by mfalchook

Got this from Northern Sounds:

The latest free updates are on-line for the OLD LADY.
The sample starts have been adjusted for a much improved attack on all
3 major platforms (giga3, kontakt 1.53 and exs24).

You can find the updates on our www.postpiano.com support section.

Users with GigaStudio 3 Solo (without the GigaEditor) can contact me
for solutions.

The updates can be added to the existing patches (Kontakt) or replace
the previous patches (EXs24). GigaStudio3 owners can load the
articulation file. If problems with the previously embedded GigaPulse
presets occur, please stack the shell encoded gig files instead. We
can also help you out to re-encode that content into the main gig
file.

Kontakt 2 updates are " under construction" and will be posted here as
soon as they are released. Just a little more fine-tuning to be done
there!

Hi Michiel,

Do you drag the entire contents of the "Latest updated EXS programs" to
the "OLD LADY" folder? A "Read me" file would have been handy.

Thanks for your help
Andris

Details from that page:

EXS24

The latest updated patches are online, at the HYPERLINK
"http://www.postpiano.com/"www.postpiano.com support section, as a zipped
file. Unzip with Stuffit or WinRar and copy to the Sampler Instruments
folder for Old Lady. You can use the new patches instead of the older
patches. Please use RedMaticas brilliant ExsManager to re-link the new
patches to the wavepool of the OLD LADY (free trial works fine). See
detailed instructions on how to re-link the samples on: HYPERLINK
"http://www.postpiano.com/support/updates/exs24/EXS%20installation%20issues.
htm"http://www.postpiano.com/support/updates/exs24/EXS%20installation%20issu
es.htm

* If you want to use both 16 and 24 bit versions, please copy the new
patches and rename them to xxxx-16.exs and xxxx-24.exs, re-link each to the
right wavepool with EM and save.

The Latest Old Lady patches

Notes:

* The new main instrument is the OLD LADY NEW patch. It has the latest bug
fixes, sample start adjustments and velocity scaling. This patch should be
used in combination with a second instance of EXS24 that plays on the same
midi channel and loaded the old lady releases patch. The reason for this new
setup is that the releases patch has small attack clicks when combined in
one patch with the main instrument. When used alone you can adjust the
attacks and overall volume to taste without altering the sound of the main
instrument.

* Lady pedal: This is a patch that only uses the pedal down samples for a
lush, warmer sound. Since it uses only 50% of the wavepool it effectively
halves the CPU/RAM load of the piano. You can use this patch if your system
has performance problems with the main patch.

*no pedal lady: This patch uses the sustain pedal up samples only, resulting
in a cleaner sound with less harmonic content. Since it uses only 50% of
the wavepool it effectively halves the CPU/RAM load of the piano. You can
use this patch if your system has performance problems with the main patch.

The REALTIME PEDALLING folder contains two special exs patches that should
be loaded in separate instances of EXS24 on the same midi channel and they
enable to add the sustain samples to the non-sustain samples when the
sustain pedal is operated. This doubles polyphony and should only be used
when extra harmonics are needed.

What am I missing here? The only way I could get this
to work was to set up ttwo seperate instruments and
copy the data onto both tracks. (Even then the
"releases" instrument sounded more like pedal release
noise than attack clicks.)
Should exs be set up as a multi instrument? Maybe
that's what I failed to do.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks, JP

I haven't looked into this yet in practice, but an answer might be to
cable the two EXS instruments one to the other (and only use one in the
arrange), or create a new MIDI instrument (NB a MIDI as opposed to audio
instrument) and cable that in parallel to two instances of Old Lady.
That way there is only one track of MIDI stuff that addresses the two
Old Ladies.

Please let me know if I'm talking garbage and shooting my mouth off
before I've tried it for real, I won't be offended.

Thanks Pete! As usual your advice was on the money and
your 1st suggestion worked quite nicely. Now my only
other question would be: "Why am i not hearing any
attack clicks as Michiel mentioned?" What I'm hearing
sounds more like pedal noise. It's curious that a file
labeled "old lady releases" would contain attack
clicks. JP
