Mapping an electronic drumset - volume

Mapping an electronic drumset - volume

2005-09-18 by Peter Ostry

I recently got a Yamaha DTXplorer drumset and start mapping it to
some drum samples I have.

---

Volume

The first samples I try are recorded at a healthy level and they
sound good if I play them from the keyboard. A velocity of 127 for
the kick drum gives me 0.4 dB in the audio instrument. But hitting
the pad on the drumset with 127 produces only -6.4 dB (I guess the
exact difference of 6 dB is just accidently).

Why are the notes less loud if an identical velocity comes from the
trigger of the drumset compared to a keyboard? Could it have
something to do with note lenght?

I can adjust the level slider and volume knob in the EXS to get more
volume. But if I put the slider far up to reach a "normal" volume I
loose all dynamics. Is that normal and do I probably have to adjust
the velocity of each part on the drumset itself to match the EXS'
requirements?
