There are many many Akai formats. The one that is "usually" referred to as
"Akai" is the S-1000/3000 proprietary format CD's, which can't be read by
computers themselves. Special reading routines are put into EXS, or
Translator, or other programs or hardware samplers in order to read them.
This is what is referred to on the EXS when it sez "Akai Convert".
If you got the files via email (hopefully they aren't copywritten and
illegal for you to use or have), they are likely S-5000 type files (.akp
programs and .wav samples). You need a 3rd party converter for those.
They could also be Pulsar .p and .s files (could be .wav), or MESA files
(.prg .s3p .sts and .wav or something else), or MPC .pgm files and on and
on and on. None fo these EXS can natively read, you need 3rd party
convertors, which are good tools to have in your toolbox.
