Making interleaved stereo files

Making interleaved stereo files

2001-07-20 by david@floydsproduce.com

Hi group,

This question is sort of about EXS24, but a little more general.
I've got some Wizoo drum library CD's for Akai, and I'm converting
them with the EXS. I'll want to use them in EXS, but I also want to
use the wav files and make some kits in my DR008...

Some of the wav files convert as mono files with "L" & "R" at the
end of it's name, instead of making stereo wav files. I don't why,
maybe it's a Wizoo thing. Not all of them do this, some do convert as
stereo files.

My question is, what's the best way to take a "L" & "R" mono files
and make a stereo file out of the 2 files? I pulled the files up in
Logic's audio window, and selected a pair of them, and tried
to "Convert to Stereo Wave", and it says "no split stereo file
selected". So, that doesn't work. Will I have to lay a pair of files
out on the arrange window, and then bounce in order to get these into
stereo wav files? What a giant pain! There must be an easier way.

Anyone know what I can do?

thanks so much,
David Floyd

Akai saves them this way and I suspect the conversion does not merge them
into a stereo wav file.

I believe that this is because Logic creates split stereo files with the
extensions of ".wal" and "war" for wav file left and wave file right. If
you rename these files with .wal and .war extensions instead of the current
.wav extensions, you'll probably be able to convert to stereo wave without
any problems.

Fernando

But some of them are converted as interleaved stereo files.

(Before we start, let me start by saying - "take my wife, please...")

The EXS convertor is probably doing a good thing. There's two definitions
of "stereo." One is "dual miked guitar with care to eliminate phase issues,
etc." and the other is "boy, this sample sounds wide!!"

Many times, especially with the latter, "stereo" files have different loop
points for both sides, different start times, other differences. In those
cases it is not a good idea to make a single interleaved stereo .wav or
AIFF file, because then those setting would be shared. In those cases, it
looks like the EXS convertor is making a decision to leave it as dual mono,
because somethign didn't match. That's why some -L and -R pairs convert as
stereo and certain ones don't.

You're probably right, that makes sense to me. Now, take my
dog...please.
