New Features in EXS24/Logic 8

New Features in EXS24/Logic 8

2007-10-15 by angelrho202

I should be receiving my copy of Logic Studio any day now. But I'm
impatient.

My understanding is that Logic is supposed to take better advantage of
multi-channel mixes and the like, able to burn DVD-As, etc. At the
moment I'm using my iBook G4 more and more live and am repeatedly
stunned by what little I can actually do with a product with so many
features. In THEORY, I've noticed EXS24 can already use multiple audio
outs, although PRACTICALLY I can't because my computer keeps crashing
my audio interface (ALWAYS losing sync at critical moments).

My new MacBook Pro will hopefully correct this problem, but I currently
have NO idea when it will come in. In the meantime, can someone out
there who already uses Logic 8 tell me from experience how or if at all
the new version has improved or enhanced what you're doing?

I'm also curious how EXS is integrated with Mainstage. The Apple
website makes everything look good in that reality distortion field.
I'm curious how actual USERS are doing with the new software.

Well I hate to say it but if youre having trouble using Logic 7 live,
Logic 8 isnt going to get any better on that iBook G4.
Im running it on a dual 1.6 G4 (was originally a single 800Mhz) and
it uses a bit more cpu then 7 did..
At our studio we have a dual 867 that I got brave and upgraded as
well. Our mixes that used to use about 50% of the CPUs are now using
up about 80 and often they overload now and quit.
Was doing a mix last night of a two mic jam we did live, has 5 tracks
total, some compressors, and EQ's on some of the tracks.. And that
thing was using an entire CPU and then some.. 5 tracks!!
Both of the machines also have substandard graphics cards though as
well (Logic Studio wants 64MB of VRAM to use the OpenGL features) so
that may have some effect on performance as well..

Youre lucky though, youll be fine once your MacBook Pro arrives.
The jump in performance from the G4 to the Intel line is like night
and day.
Since I cant afford a new one soon Im thinking of making my new Dell
CoreDuo at work into a Hackintosh hahaha.
