OT:I want sounds! Samplers Vs Modules?

OT:I want sounds! Samplers Vs Modules?

2001-08-08 by roman pirie

Let me be more specific but keep this simple. All my limited personal
opinions of course.
I use a sequencer (Logic). I need sounds to play and make music eg drums and
pitched instruments (eg everything else like pianos, guitars, japanese
kyotos).
I want as many different sounds as possible in my musical arsenal (every
favourite sound from recorded music of the last 50 years).

Types of sounds I categorise as:
Synthesizers (with all their classic editableness)
Samplers (open ended and very good for getting lots of drums but also
capable of synth stuff and instrument playback).
Sound Modules (sample playback): instant access to a collection of
instruments and drum kits.

Now in theory a sampler should make sample playback modules obsolete. You
get a sampler and all sounds come in cdrom libraries. Buy one playback
machine and only spend money on sounds you want.
Why is it then that I always use my Korg trinity rack for pianos, organs etc
etc instead of my exs24 soft sampler loaded with 50 cdroms. Because it
sounds good.
So my long winded email is trying to say why has the promise of the sampler
not been kept. I find myself lusting after a Roland XV5080 with all
expansion cards possible, an Emu Mo Phatt etc.
Why do instruments loaded off cdroms into an akai or exs sound shite
compared to a module like the tr-rack with only 32mgs of ROM.

The only thing I use my samplers for is drums.
My Kit:
Nord Lead 2
Trinty Rack
Exs24.
Tell me I'm missing something.
