[exs] drumloops with EXS - or not? (maybe lame question)

[exs] drumloops with EXS - or not? (maybe lame question)

2002-01-02 by Toranaga

Hi list,
Im currently building up a song around some drumloops, a thing I did with
Acid easily before, but now I want to do it all in Logic. The drumloops
originally come from some Akai CDs, so I loaded them in EXS and played them
from there. Now I realize that the loops beats and my song metronome start
running apart from each other after a couple of measures (I guess the
drumloops are not exactly the stated bpm).
I have some ideas how to fix that, but because Im a Newbie I thought Id
ask the Pros how to handle this (and save some time :-) ), and maybe get
some general hints on dealing with drumloops:

Is it a good idea at all to play drumloops from EXS or should I put them as
audio-tracks in Logic and loop them from there (for using Logics
loop/tempo/timestretch features...)
If I have them in EXS as a single looped sample, what are your experiences
with commercial sample CDs, can I trust the stated bpm numbers or will I
have to re-edit many samples myself?
If I have a perfect "round" loop in EXS which is only a few cents
faster/slower than the song tempo (on the long run), would it be a good idea
to "retrigger" the loop every few measures?
Is there a difference (timing-wise) between a) having the loop in EXS as a
one-shot sample and looping the part from Logics arrange window or b)
having the sample looped within EXS and have it as one long part in Logic?
Or is it generally speaking recommended to "slice" up each drumloop and
trigger the single sounds via Midi - like I believe I could do it with
ReCycle (didnt try that yet..)?

Maybe these are very basic questions, and I guess I could finally reach my
goal with any method, but how do the Pros do it?
Any short hint appreciated!

Thanks, Tora

To this question, Yes...you should retrigger *every* bar.....

Doing this will help but also...as with a hardware sampler ...trigger the
loop every bar (or whatever).

Also make sure your start point is spot on.

Do it every bar (if its a one bar loop!)

Yes!
The latter will go out of time. The former retriggers the sample at every
Loop start in Logic.

Recommended isn't really the word. Every answer is a right one if it works
for you.

Using the "slicing" technique will just give you flexibility.....to play a
different beat with the same sound for instance, or to speed up and slow
down the part easily. I'd suggest mastering basic triggering before using
ReCycle type techniques.

Start by treating loops as audio parts in Logic, matching tempos of loops
and Logic. Combine with MIDI drums to see how good your loop setting is.
Shorten the loop. Chop it up and join it together. Combine with another
loop....try timestretching to match tempos - there are some pitfalls
here!....see how far you can go before you think "I need to use a sampler to
*play* this loop".

Good luck - and enjoy!

Dave

Just a few additions based on my experience and working methods to
the replies so far:
1) If you want to be creative and "play" different loops then load
them in EXS24 and trigger them via the keyboard. Beware that you get
diffent results depending on whether you choose the one shot
parameter for you keyzones.
2) If you want to experiment with slicing up your loops and
triggering each bit via midi you could start out with Logic's Remove
Silence feature. It creates a small audio region for each beat
(depending on the nature of the loop and the settings you choose in
the Remove Silence window). If you create audio files from these
regions and load them in EXS24 you will be able to "play" the loop's
parts on your keyboard.

Kind regards,

Soren Riis-Vestergaard

Hello dudes!!

I can recommend Recycle wich is great you can loop a sample in there and you
can find the peaks and then exprt it as a soundfont file and you get all
the samples to you r keyboard automatically you save time and one other
thing that is really good is that you can use all the samples via your
keyboard as midinotes this is the only method for me to really get some
beats with funkyness try it you might like it!!

Best regards,

Alvaro Villalobos.

Ps And if you have any questions just ask me but dont count on me to find
your letter really fast! Ds.
