Huge Free Sample Library

Huge Free Sample Library

2002-02-06 by gordonmurrison

At Akai's site in Japan you can download heaps of free S5000 /
S6000 / MPC2000XL samples. There's gigabytes of samples to
download. For starters there's two 256Mb grand pianos!

It's taken me 5 days to download them all! Obviously the EXS can't
read S5000 programs so you'll need a convertor. I got CDXtract and
it seems to work very well on some patches and not so well on others.

Anyway, here's the link...

ftp.akaipro.co.jp

Gordon

Thank you for this! As a friendly reminder, please type URLs as
http://ftp.akaipro.co.jp so us users of Outlook Express on the Mac can just
click the link, rather than cutting & pasting. Thank you.

OK but it's ftp://ftp.akaipro.co.jp (not http://). All the files are
in sub-folders so you might be better to find yourself a good ftp
client which can traverse sub folders and re-try downloads when they
fail (as they do all the time from this site - it's slow and very
busy!)

It's worth the effort though.

Pretty damn amazing! Very clean. I only had time to hear a few last
night. The pianos are much better than the standard EXS one and come
in 72, 136 and 256 Mb versions. CDXtract didn't manage the
conversion 100% so there's are a few gremlins to sort out. I tried a
few drum kits and an electric sitar too and they were excellent.

Get a good ftp client like ftp explorer. And be prepared for a long
wait! The site is slow and busy. It should work from IE5 but you'll
only be able to download files individually by clicking on each one.
With ftp explorer you can copy folders and all the files within
without further user interaction.

whohoo...

i have a pc here at work set to dump the lot.
got a 3mb link so it should keep coming.

the exs piano is pretty dreary, how does it sound compared to something
like the session board of a jv1080, or dark classical on the QS series
synths?

I have a few of the drum sounds down now.. not bad... waiting for some
more.
btw... thanks!

Don't know. I've not heard them. It's got to be the best free piano
though.

Do you have CDXtract for converting to EXS format or do you use
something else? I'd be interested to compare results if you use
another convertor.

Btw, when using an FTP program: The AKAI FTP allows for multiple logins and
downloads which speeds up things pretty much. Open your FTP program, grab a
folder and download it, open up another instance of the program and grab the
next folder...

Apart from that, I found some sounds useful, others were more of the average
kind (i.e. there's better soundfonts around for example).
Couldn't try the piano as I'm still only on a modem.

Sascha

Hi, this is my first time posting but I have been reading the messages for a
few months. I was very interested in trying out these samples but when I
clicked on the link below with explorer 6, I got an ftp folder error saying
" a connection with the server could not be establish." Maybe there are too
many users trying to download or is this site down? I also tried ftp
explorer with similar results. Any ideas?

Thanks
Juan

To anyone that has gone through the S-5000->EXS bloopers, could you e-mail
me or the list which .akp files that are less than OK and we can check them

For us who dont have the possibility to translate these Akai 5000 sounds,
is it possible for someone on the list to post only the instruments at the
EXS lists fileplace (at yahoo) and we can download the samples from Japan
ourselves?
Maybe choose the best piano and a couple of more.
(CD extract is not avaliable for Mac just yet.)
I know this is work but it would certainly make many people happy.
Me, for example :-)

I can do that if you want...

Gimme a couple of days though, as I have only just bought CD Extract.

Does anyone know how I can get it to browse a hard disk rather than have
to view from CD?

Just give me the name of the patches that don't convert correctly and
I will be happy to check them and fix the problem. This is so easy when

You have two choices. Manually build the exs instruments by hand. Or buy
a converter.

I will make the exs instruments available on an ftp site in a day or so
if you want to just grab the akai sample data.

RE: [exs] Huge Free Sample Library

Ok then, it looks like there are going to be a few people here wanting
these exs instruments.
I've converted the pianos and volume 1 and it looks to be about 1mb in
exs instruments.
Given that there are 6 volumes (including the mpc sounds) it is likely
to be about 6mb in total.

I'll be putting them on my own server for about 2 days. After than they
are gone.

Once youve grabbed the instruments I will obtain a new dhcp lease and
pull the server down.
From then on in you have to share them amongst yourselves.
Call this an exercise in communal co-operation if you like :-)

I have about 1/2 the samples (taken 18 hours so far) and then I am going
to need to convert them all.
I'll post them probably on Saturday morning, I'll email the IP address
to the list.

All you will need to do is type in 217.000.000.000/pub (where
217.000.000.000 will be replaced with the exact ip. Please dont try that
ip now. it is just an explanation).

In the pub folder will be 1 zip file with all the instruments.

I am doing this as a favour to you all, in the hope we can foster a
caring sharing lil collective.
Last time I did something like this (on another list) I got all sorts of
hate mail from people that didnt grab them in time, couldnt work out how
to grab them etc etc. Obviously I am dealing with a much more
enlightened group of people here and there will be none of that
foolishness (am I subtle or what?).

Lastly. I am converting them to .gig as well, for my own use.
Currently 1 single volume is sitting at 256mb, and that is without the
pianos.
I WONT be uploading them for everyone to grab on any server that I own.

If someone wants to host the gigasampler files then cool. Expect it to
be about a gigabyte though.
Contact me and I will either post a CD to you, or we can work out a way
for me to upload 1gb of .gig's in a way that dosnt cost me money.

£50 for CD Xtract is absolutely worth it though, people. Buy it, you
will not regret it.

Or send me money.... :-)
I'll be in touch.

James

no. :-)

I've noticed that the Mac version wont convert to .gig (for the very
sensible reason that giga is pc only)
For myself though, i prefer to use a Mac, and have both platforms in the
studio.

It would be good to have the Mac version support the .gig format and
then be able to fly it over to the PC (i use an ftp server in the studio
for cross platform transfers).
Ah well... cant have everything.

For that reason I probably wont get the Mac version when it comes out
unless it adds functionality in some other way.

Sure,

but I am using CDXtract not Translator. The functionality I need is
covered by it and the extra expense of Translator is something I cant
justify right now.

A question though. Will Translator offer at any poin tthe ability to
translate FROM EXS to other formats (ie giga)

I prefer to use giga for most instruments that dont require heavy
processing but I have a couple'a'dozen gigabytes of exs samples.

Cheers,

James

(yes it is a slow day at work, thats why I am posting so much.. plus I
am waiting for cdxtract to convert more sounds)

Correction:

So far just the Piano converted to .gig is over 1gb (for anyone who has
downloaded it it comes in 72, 128 and 256mb flavours) so I wont be
making the giga version available to anyone. I will be buying another
60gb hard disk though. :-)

Did the big pianos convert OK to EXS - I used CDXtract and some of
the groups it created had their ADSRs all messed up so some notes
would sound for around 4 seconds after striking the keys.

I am at work right now so I am just doing the conversions. I'll try them
out tonight.

I've converted them to both exs and giga. I'll be converting them to
reaktor too.
I'll let you know what worked best tomorrow.

Beats me... :-)
Sorry but I just dont know.
You can use the samples if you download them and wait for me to post the
.exs files.
I will be using the exs instruments on my Mac, and the giga and reaktor
samples on the . I convert them daily on a PC and transfer them to the
Mac.

Thought of getting a PC for doing such tasks? <ducks>

Translator on Virtual PC 4+ works very well.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
