Automation Issue

Automation Issue

2000-12-11 by philter@mac.com

I had 5 EXS instruments instantiated and I wanted to automate the
filter cutoff frequency. I put Logic in record and moved the knob
with my mouse to record the data. When I went to play it back, I got
no action from the EXS.

When I looked at the Event list everything looked fine except that it
didn't say anything in the info column (where it normally says
EXS#xx).

After further investigation I realized that the Low Cut filter that I
had plugged in on that track had showed up in the list of Controller
numbers 'cutting off' the regular EXS parameters. When I unplugged
the Low Cut plug, then I saw the full list of the EXS parameters and
the automation played back fine.

I was wondering what the logic is with this type of setup. Can I not
have any plug-ins on an EXS track that I want to automate? Is there
a way to determine what Contollers a plug will use or if it should
respond to MIDI data at all?

Just wondering if any of you have run into this and found any
possible workarounds.

thanks,

Philip

Automation issues
The reason for your problem is something you could not know about without
asking. I phoned Emagic support about this and got the problem solved
straight away.
Remove your Autoload from the Logic folder and put it somewhere safe. Then
fire up Logic and it will create a fresh page on it's own. Copy and paste
all of the audio instrument objects into your autoload and voila. There is
some invisible wiring that is impossible to know about (emagic told me this)
and the only way to get it is by allowing Logic to create the audio objects.
Alternatively you can just use the newly created page as your Autoload and
recreate your favourite environment.
Good luck. If you need anymore help don't hesitate to ask
Peace

huh...I thought something was fishy.

So let me get this straight. The way I setup the Instrument objects
that I'm using now was to select 16 of my Audio Objects, copy and
paste them onto a new layer and change their assignments to the
Instruments. (and that's the problem...)

And what I should do is copy and paste Instrument objects from the
Logic created Autoload?

Come to think of it, this 'invisible wiring' may explain another
problem I was noticing where I would double click on an Audio Object
from the Arrange window (to select it in the Enviro) and sometimes an
Instrument Object on another layer would be mysteriously selected and
thus be affected by any volume, etc. changes I made to the AO (very
annoying).

I'll try it out.

Thank you very much for that little gem.

Exactly.
Now I too have had the mystery fades on an instrument seemingly unrelated.
This has ceased too since i let Logic make it's own Autoload.
Let me know if it works for you...
