it from the Emagic website and it seems to work with 4.8.1 as well! So 
you get a "streaming-alike" feature like Giga, but better. :-)

Anyone have a direct URL for this VSM update? (Emagic site seems not so

Although I've got my EXS & a couple of Sample CDs (Thanks to Eric P's
irresistable offerings), I'm still getting a handle on all that surrounds it
(sampling & the EXS). What is streaming in the context of using EXS?

My (limited) knowledge of it is that there is a thing called video streaming
where you can begin watching the content before you've actually downloaded
the entire file to hard drive; or in fact, without needing to save it at all
(ie: once played the data can be purged). But after that, it's a mystery.

Usually a sampler works on RAM. So, if you have 256 Mb RAM left and you 
want to load a program that is 500+ Mb, then you can forget it.
Streaming means things are loaded "on the fly" from the harddisk... this 
is not 100% correct, but that's the concept anyway. This way, you're no 
longer limited to your amount of RAM.
Since I hardly ever use big samples, it's not very interesting for me, 
but for people who do orchestral scoring e.g., this is most likely great.

Well there are advantages to using the EXS but I have to say that
Gigasampler is still better for this sort of thing.
I dont do orchestral scoring as such, but have a large collection of
orchestral instruments that get used in ballady pop music that i
(regrettably) seem to be doing for people these days.

When you load a new song with loads of exs instruments and plugins the
song can take up to 25 seconds or so to load up fully.
The thing is though that I find myself using the same instruments on the
same channels over and over for different songs. SO with Giga running on
a separate PC, my Logic autoloader is free of any of this sort of thing.

If I had my 20 odd channels of strings, oboe, horns and such loading up
each time I wanted to start a new track, or go back to an old one it
would piss me off a bit considering the sounds were already there in the
old track anyway.
I'm not expecting this to change and it isnt a gripe at all... just a
different way of working.

I dont think EXS is necessarily the best way for orchestral scorers to
go for this fact. EXS to me is much more suited to the way you work
joeri.. .loads of loops and kits. When working on my own stuff
(industrial/metal) I tend to use the exs over giga. Actually I can
remember the last time I used giga for my own stuff.

To those having problems with the VSM thing: As said, this patch is not made
for 4.8.
Ok, why is it on the website then? I would assume that the patch wasn't
ready when the 5.0 CDs were mastered, but the functionality was allready
planned and supposed to be finished when the CDs finally were delivered. So
an installer with an automatic internet updater was provided. Later on the
file was provided as a separate download because *some* people complained
about the (ridiculous) idea of only being able to use VSM with an online
machine.

To those thinking that the VSM patch improves their EXS performance: I doubt
this even could be the case. I mean, you defenitely have to activate this
functionality from the EXS "Option" menu and adjust some settings. But hey,
I don't want to dissapoint you all, sometimes belief is a good thing ;-) ...
So, better forget about everything I've just written.

try to tweak the Search preferences of the EXS ( in the EDIT window..."
it works good here ...
maybe the DW was corrupt...take it again and reinstall it in the extension
folder ( copy it inside, don't drag it only.....reboot...)

Here with G4/667, 512MB, OS9.2.1, LAMP 4.8.1 it is all systems go.
Try trashing finder prefs and rebuilding the desktop...

What OS you on?
What Mac do you have?
