MP3 Converter

2002-02-18 by Eli Krantzberg

Hi All,

Sorry for the slightly OT topic (it seemed timely:-)) but can anyone
point me to a free MP3 encoder (for the Mac). I have been using SoundJam
but it "ran out". It says Ive used up all my free encodings. I didn't
realize there was a finite limit to it's (free) usage.

Thanks.

I'd like to warn you about Itunes.
Although it is a very useful application, the mp3 encoding is not useful
for professional work in my opinion.
My mixes sounds totally different in itunes.
Even converting at 320 kbps gives you a bassboost and it does something
weird with the stereo image.
For some reason it appears to "boost" up the amount of reverb if you A/B
test it with you master wave/aiff file.
At least, that's what I experience....
I'm going for Spark. (I know, it's not exactly free....)

BTW, I think SoundJam sounds better than itunes.
At least 2.6.
For some reason I lost my 2.6 version and installed 2.5 or something and
that didn't sound half of 2.6.
My 2 cents....

No, it is not.
My EQ is turned off.
But one shouldn't expect world-class converting from a free product.
Just be aware.

apparently Anders hasn't found the preference for the "sound enhancer" or
"sound wrecker" as I call it. I think iTunes is way better than sound jam.
In fact isn't it the same code? I remember reading somewhere that apple
bought the license to use the code.

iTunes and SoundJam were developed by the same people.

I'm afraid I haven't found it.(I'm hunting high and low)
But you probably should check

http://mp3licensing.com/mp3/mp3pro.html

This should be interesting reading and very useful for windows users.
You can download a free MP3pro encoder/reader.

Good luck!

Yes I'm afraid I have found the "sound enhancer"
I even turned it off.

If you listen to different encoders there definitely is a difference.
Although it is the same people behind doesn't mean it is the same code.
It sounds different. Have you tested SoundJam 2.6 against itunes?
