Redraw Bug EXS in LAMP4.x AND 5.x

Redraw Bug EXS in LAMP4.x AND 5.x

Hello,

I am having redraw bugs frequently when editing zones in the
EXS 24. The EXS Instrument edit window in Logic versions 4.X
(i.e. 4.81) turns into an oriental carpet pattern during editing (not
always, but VERY often, at least once each session). Opening
and closing zones with the little triangle on the left top of the zone
causes this trouble. Logic is very unstable afterwards and tends
to crash.

I am having this problem with Logic 5, too. frequently, a redraw
bug appears. Every dialog windows shows up without content (if
you know where to click, it closes again, but leaves a white
square on the screen then). Afterwards, if it is possible
to save your work, the mouse freezes.

Anybody who has a similar problem?!?

Running on a G4QS, 776Mhz, 512MB, Apple 17" TFT Display
(ADC) and MOTU 2408 System.

You are probably short of internal memory.
I guess this only happens when you load lots of "big" instruments.

No, this is not the cause. I have had this problem since I got the EXS24.
Since I have collapsible window panes active, I simply collapse and expand
the window to get around the issue. I have 384MB of RAM on my Laptop and 512
on my Dual-800. If never been able to deduce the origin of the problem. It's
definitely not a memory issue from what I have seen. -Jer

While we're at it, here's another annoying bug with the EXS24. When you trim
or remove any part of the sample in the sample editor in an open EXS
instrument, that sample will no longer trigger unless you change all
instruments on all current tracks using that instrument and then return them
back to the correct instrument. Usually this is one EXS instance, but on
songs where I have the same instrument on multiple tracks, I have to change
and change back all of them that are applicable. Is this still a problem in
Logic 5?

I still think this might be the problem!
I have also had this problem, but only when I´m at the limit of my amount of
memory.
Try using the new virtual memory for the EXS.
(Then you will probably get lots of free memory)
This has not happened to me since I started using it.

At Emagic they say that it´s Quicktime that takes care of the graphics.
And if all memory is occupied with samples there might not be any memory
left over for Quicktime to update the graphics.
(B.t.w how much memory is allocated to Logic?
Maby it´s too much, so the system (i.e. Quicktime) is short of memory for
redraws?)

Just a guess.
Michael

On my opinon this is no bug. If you process or cut out a sample
in ONE instrument, I suggest it does not affect the same sample
in another instrument, because its content is already loaded into
RAM. You don´t stream from your HD. Its a sampler! If you make
a change of a sample on your HD the changes in your
instrument will only take place if you reload it.

Maybe this could help.
Cheers

hmmm. good idea. But where do you check this option?!?

No, I left enough memory.

Yep, I know this works well. But anyway, it is going on my nerves
and also, my computer tends to crash easily after.

I suggest so, too. Any other comments, please !?!

For Mac:

http://www.emagic-mirror.com/pub/drivers/vsm_manager.sit

You must have Logic 4.8.1 I think?
And read the "read me" file.

Thank you for this hint. I just hooked up my computer and this
feature works in V.5.0 as well. Maybe the bug disappears.

Do you have any information how EXS virtual memory enabled
affects the overall preformance? I use a lot of plugins and
usually the performance is at the limit. (G4QS 867/640MB/MOTU
2408)

Thanks-Steven

I strongly disagree. There is no excuse for losing your ability for
triggering a sample just because you trimmed the WAV or AIFF. My ASR-10
never put me through that crap. Now I love the EXS24, but I think it's
ridiculous for me to have to take this for granted. It's a serious flaw in
work flow efficiency. Also, I didn't state that it affects the other
instruments of the same name. I said that you had to close/change every
other one to be able to trigger the sample in the first one.
