Pianet Samples to share

Pianet Samples to share

2002-02-26 by Thomas Peitzmann

Hi everybody,

I have just produced an EXS instrument from my old Hohner Pianet T.
(For those interested: This is an electric piano I still have from
the late seventies. It has metallic blades as resonators and pickups
for every key. The special thing about it is the connection between
key and the resonators: It doesn't have hammers, but kind of a
magnetic rubber blocks. The magnets pull up the resonators when you
hit the key, and the rubber acts as damper when you release. Never
made a breakthrough compared to the Clavinet D6 - but it was cheaper,
i.e. within my budget those days.)
The instruments has it's rough edges, and so do the samples - but
that's what I still like about it.

I'd like distribute this to interested people - giving back a little
after receiving so much from people on this list. My problem is that
the compressed instruments with samples is 15MB (Mac .sit) and 19MB
(PC .zip), and I have a problem putting them somewhere on the web,
not having enough private web space.
I remember somebody offering to host such samples. If somebody can
offer this still, please contact me.

Best regards, Thomas

P.S.: These are all produced by myself with software I own and from
hardware I also own ;-)

Hey Thomas!
that sounds great, and as i know that Pianet is a very rare
instrument nowadays. I would love to listen to that samples!

If you are a mac user, have you already set up your iDrive
(www.apple.com) ? Its a virtual 25MB drive on the net, and has a
public folder for files to share. All my macintosh friends can
unstuff zipped files, i.e. if I was you I would just put the zipped file
right there. I used also xdrive (www.xdrive) in the past, but I heard
they are charging for their service now.

Cheers- Steven

Hi Steven,

good tip! I forgot about this. I have my iDisk set up, but never used
it really - what an occasion!

So you can find my Pianet samples now on my apple homepage:
http://homepage.mac.com/peitzmann/FileSharing1.html

I figured that wav files would be useful for both PC and Mac users, so,
as I had only space for either wav or aiff I chose the former. I have
however not thoroughly tested this version, as I did everything in aiff
first. So please tell me if there are problems. (You may also tell me
whether you like it...)

The zip file is 19.2MB, however Apple seems to binhex files in addition
(which makes it more like 26MB). But I guess you Windows friends can
deal with that ;-)

Enjoy! Thomas

Dear List and specifically EP if you are around,

I am about to convert my AKAI GC cd rom into ESX samples and I realize
that no matter what I do I can't figure out how to make the volumes
correspond to the printed documentation. The volumes don't seem to
correspond to the docs, ie the volumes come up alphabetized in the ESX
convert menu, but in the documentation "jewelz" is the first one on the
list. Thanks for any ideas

Is it necessary to convert the .wav file to .aiff to use it on Mac?

You may need to change the file type / creator code of the .EXS file. I will
post a drag & drop type changer to my Web site at
http://MusicBootCamp.com/exs24.shtml where you can download the app for Mac
and do this by dragging the EXS24 file to the changer app. -Jer

The .EXS file was created on the Mac, so it should work there without
any changes. And no, .wav should work on the Mac also without
converting.

I didn't mean to imply that there definitely was a compatibility problem
with regard to the recent EXS post. But many times, I have downloaded kits
from the internet that did not function without Creator/Type conversion. I
offered this utility as a general tool, not as a specific requirement for
this particular situation. I've had to use this at times when copying
instruments on a client's PC to their Mac and in one case after converting
samples with Translator and moving them to the Mac (the Translator issue may
not be a problem in general but it was an issue in one situation). My
original post stated the appropriate answer to the question of WAVs on a
Mac. I us Mac folks can read WAVs (PC EXS users can use AIFFs too). However,
I'm sure the utility I offered will come in handy in the future for some
people.

Another Helpful Utility

2002-02-26 by HELP@MusicBootCamp.com

I have added another useful utility for Mac users at
http://MusicBootCamp.com/EXS24.shtml

Invisible File Copier: This nifty utility allows Mac users to view
Type/Creator codes of existing files (any kind), change those codes, view
invisible files, make invisible files visible and visa versa.

2 ideas: (1) Name them 001-Jewelz, 002-FooBar, etc., to match the
documentation, or,
(2) Name them 062-Jewelz, 066-Funky, 092-Laidback, using the BPM
tempo of the original. I think that is how Eric organizes them anyway.
EXS will sort by the first letters or numbers of the name.

(Names of loops impersonated...)

BTW, I have Methamorphosis AKAI EXS-ed, and I love it! The tempo-
matched menu patches are an endless source of inspiration. And the
fidelity is simply perfect. Thank you Eric P. (Don't even get me
started on how cool Groove Control is...)

P.S. Eric, if you are lurking...whatever happened to the 'Brazil'
library with Alex. I assume that there is some sort of a
percussive 'Instrument' heading our way???

Eric,

Completely unfair!!! Teasing is not allowed. ;^)

On a more serious note, I hope you do reconsider releasing further GC
titles, ie: Brazilian Beats. As happy as I am with the RetroFunk & BackBeat
CDs, one of the reasons I bought into the GC concept was the planned Latin
percussion disk(s). While there may be advances in your virtual instruments
that carry beyond what you can do w/EXS & GC, I do hope you consider
finishing off the original classic drumming trilogy of disks.

Regards,

   Shane

Thanks Scott...if you dig those aspects of MM you'll flip over Stylus...we
expanded the menu concept and broke it down to EVERY tempo, with Swing
versions and percussion menus too! You can filter and tweak each loop key
independantly just by touching the keys and changing the sliders in Zone Edit
mode....really creative and fast way to customize the grooves. And of course
all memorized by your Logic song!

Don't worry...GC is a major part of our future plans and all of that material
you want and much more will be released. Just don't hold your breath for more
Spectrasonics sample libraries, the whole idea of the VIs is that we can
offer a MUCH better product, value and musical experience in an instrument
than we could ever do with sample libraries and the limitations of all the
current samplers and compatibility nightmares.

I'm a dedicated Spectrasonics fan (as you may know), but I have never tried
Metamorphosis, and I am considering its purchase.

How would you describe it, and in what genres of music do you feel it sits
most comfortably?

If you ever have a need for a "non-acoustic" groove that's more creative and
processed that would describe it. It sort of starts where the grooves on DR
left off. Lots of unique sounding stuff, but I put a lot of effort in making
them useful and musical. It is our most popular product at the moment and
most-likely the #1 selling CD-ROM on the market in 2001. You can do some
wonderful things with it when combined with BB, RF, LG, and the ILIO GC
titles.

The demos, quotes and reviews on this page will give you a better idea of
what it's about than my ramblings:

All the best,

Actually Gary...a quick way to do it is to copy and paste the names of the
midi files to replace the sampler instruments names..then use Drop Rename of
NAME It to remove the .mid or change it to .exs.

Still got to do it a file at a time, but it's faster than typing!

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
