EXS 24 Logic Sampler Users Group

Ah, but you DO have the manual, my confounded colleague.  It's in software
and is available under the Help menu in Logic.  It's that thing called the
"Logic EXS24 Guide".  It's very good--check it out.  EXS24 doesn't come with
a hard-copy manual.

I just got ES2, and it came with a great manual. Really well done, for 
both experienced synth users as well as new folks. I was going to get 
EVOC20 too, but then I happend by antares.com to deal w/ my ancient 
Infinity registration, and saw this;

As I said: it does.  Just got my EXS a few weeks ago -- the new 
version,  without the need to send CDs back, etc.  Came with a 
manual...

If it indeed works, it's quite interesting indeed (haven't tried the 
sound samples yet), although I don't see how it would replace a 
vocoder.  Very different animals, from the looks of it.

Talking about looks: this kantos-thing _does_ have an absolutely 
horrid graphical interface.  First price in the "I don't want 
software to look like this"-contest...  That alone would be a reason 
not to buy it...  I often wonder what's wrong with s/w developers. 
There seems to be a kind of race to get the most sci-fi looking 
interface on the planet, usually sacrificing visual clarity and 
user-friendliness in the process...

I know I know, sometimes I can be a DORK!!
I actually printed the manual from the disc last night, but it still 
seems pretty vauge on how I can use my own .aif files to make 
my own exs24 "instruments"  The manual only seems to deal 
with store bought sampler CDs.  See, here is my deal---
I made my own drum samples using LogicAPMac, and saved 
them as .aif  files. I have a folder on my HardDrive called 
DrumSamples and inside that folder I have about 300+ hits, 
kicks, snare, etc. and my goal is to create about 20+ different 
drum kits of my own to use with the exs24.  I spent about 2 hours 
last night with the manual trying to make this work, but I've had 
not a gram of luck.

Any help would be much loved, e-mail me direclty if you wish.

Hi,
You should have a folder in Logic Audio called Sampler Instruments.You
should put your AIFF files in there, I dont think the EXS24 can see them
otherwise

Yeah, I definitely agree. After checking out the docs and demo stuff, my 
reaction was basically "this looks really cool, but I bet it's a 
complete nightmare to use." Much as I enjoy H.R. Giger's art, it's not 
such a good starting place for a user-interface. The rest of Antares' 
stuff looks so clean and professional compared to this that all I can 
figure is they're betting on some market niche that wants "wild" looking 
stuff. Here's what I got back from Antares;

Open EDIT screen. Create NEW instrument. IMPORT MULTIPLE SAMPLES. Pick
Chromatic import option (after choosing your samples) to auto-map up to 88
drums up the keyboard (I wouldn't do more). Pick AUTOMAP to stretch a single
sound across the keyboard. In either case SAVE YOUR INSTRUMENT! There are
other ways to do this, but these methods are the quickest.

manual (sorry about the lack of name-rememberance, i
auto-pilot deleted the mail without engaging my brain
first ;)

i have a spare manual if you'd like it (the company
who i bought it from as part of a package goofed up
and sent me a box without the disk or type-b code.
i've just received a complete replacement package as
the one i had was incomplete... hence the spare
manual!)

Not true.  The instrument files (name.exs) should be in the Sampler 
Instruments folder, but the waves thmeselves can be anywhere.

As for basic EXS usage: open the instrument editor (EDIT button), 
create a new Zone.  A strip appears underneath the keyboard, 
representing the zone.  In the lower part of the window a box appears 
containing all the zone parameters.  In this box, click the 
wave/sample-field (or whatever it's called) and pick a sample in the 
fileselector. The low/high key (or whatever *that* is called :-) 
determines the boundaries of the zone.
Create as many zones as you like, line them up across the keyboard, etc...

This should get you going...

STILL not true. =)

Not exactly at least. You can have an alias in the Sampler Instruments (or 
shortcuts on PC?) and it'll point. That may be obviously natural to 
Mac-lifers, but it's not necessarily true - on Mac's, and less so on PC's. 
It's a great idea.

Oh yes, sure.  For me a file or a folder is equivalent to "the thing 
or an alias to it".  Actually quite a few of the standard folders in 
my Logic folder are aliasses...
