I agree. I'm completely inspired by sound. I guess it's like clay of
different grades and colors. You touch it, feel it, look at it, and it
starts to take on a shape of it's own. I just have to find it. Sometimes
it's a flop: great rhythm, but I'll throw the rest out and start again with
other pitched sounds. I guess it truly is art on all levels. Often, I'll
decide the genre (or the client will as Colin keenly pointed out), but other
times, when I'm doing something for fun, it could end up being one of a
number of different styles. I write House, Electro-Industrial,
Medieval/Gothic, World, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Neo-Soul. Just depends on the sound
sources really.
Also, I tend to mix in Logic as I go (less pain later), unless it's an
external synth sound. But since getting the ES2 and other VST instruments, I
haven't bothered with my SuperNova or MicroQ at all. In fact, I'm giving
serious thought to selling them. Not solid on that yet though. Having a
diverse sample library is critical in my opinion. It is the clay wheel that
I use to build my clay sculpture on, to continue with the metaphor.
