EXS performance on beige G3?

I'm thinking about setting up an old beige G3 to run "with" my main machine and use it as a sound module of sorts. I would use the exs in my main machine to "create" the midi tracks but I would play them back from the G3. This would leave me more power for other stuff in the main machine. I'm thinking that I would simply move the tracks to be played on the old machine ahead in order to deal with the latency that I will inevitably get. But I would like to know how well it works for some other folks before I put it all together. Anybody running the EXS24 on a G3 233 or 266? Another issue I think I might have is authorizing it. I don't intend to have a cd drive because I want to build it into a special enclosure. Would I really have to upgrade the gold exs bundle to version 5 so that I can use the new key (and not need the cd)?
