folders and cataloging samples...?!?!

can someone please help me with getting samples and such in the right places so that the sampler will "see" them in the pull down menu? the manual is very vague on this--even though each time i read it it seems to make sense...--but then doesn't work when i store them on an external hard drive... are there two parts to the sample??-- in different places?? i'm using a TiBook and an external 80GB oxford drive. the samples that i already had appear lovely (from the external drive), but i just converted a few cdroms--from AKAI format--and can't get them to appear in the same way as my others from the external drive... can someone help? tv
