Any Mac/EXS "power giga" users out there?

Any Mac/EXS "power giga" users out there?

2002-08-09 by Tim Clarke

I'm curious to know whether or not anyone has configured an Apple machine
that can approach the power of PC/Gigastudio setups using the new EXS Giga
import and hd streaming. I do MIDI-orchestral stuff and am mac-based, so
the thought of having multiple tracks of sumptuous Giga-libraries running on
a mac has me foaming at the chops...

Are the current crop of G4 machines powerful enough to realistically pull
this type of processing off? Or are we a generation or two away from having
the power available on the mac side to do this? If you're doing this now,
any tips as far as hardware/software configuring?

Not trying to ruffle any feathers here--this is a serious issue for me.

Thanks,

Tim

I tried importing a giga library the other day, and it didn't import
correctly. I posted a message about this already, so I won't go into
details. That said, I would like to hear if anyone else has problems
when importing giga patches that have crossfading groups/zones.

No kidding?

I thought I'd read someplace that Platinum 5.x added multiproc support for
macs. I'm thinking this was in the 5.0 addenda manual. Maybe I was just on
crack and it only applies to DSP plugins..

At any rate, I haven't ran into any EXS related headroom problems on my dual
800, but then again I'm probably not pushing it as hard as some of you are.

I'll typically have 8-10 instances of EXS24 in a given piece. I don't know
if that's more or less than everyone else or not..

I DO know that the memory manager add in thing seems to work very well.

we are

Maybe this situation will improve with OSX...dunno, but we aint there
yet,
that's for sure."

Well, when Macs get there let me know! :) I wold have bought a Mac
already if it was atleast as powerful as my Wintel regardless of
price. We will together hope Macs get a power boost.

It's been there long before that!
 From the 4.5.1 read-me:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Logic Audio Platinum/Gold/Silver 4.5.1

* Multi Processor Support: The internal, native audio engine is now
able to take advantage of the new dual-processor Apple Macs. (Mac AV,
Audiowerk, 1212I/O, DirectI/O, ASIO, StudI/O, EASI).
- Enable the Multi Processor Support check-box within the audio
driver preferences.

As I recall, one processor handles audio and the other handles the
rest (screen redraws, MIDI, etc). I've been using MP support for ages
now. The only problem is Absynth which doesn't like MP, and this will
be fixed in Absynth v1.3 I believe.

Thanks. I was pretty sure I'd read that someplace. Glad to know I wasn't
on crack.
