Garritan Strings = joy

Garritan Strings = joy

2002-08-23 by Ned Bouhalassa

Yesterday, I received my copy of the full version of Garritan Orchestral
Strings. I had originally bought the light-AKAI version to test it out, and
based on my experience, I had decided to bite the bullet and go for broke.

All I can say is: FANTASTIC. It's the best sample library I've ever heard.
The sounds are extraordinarily beautiful and well-balanced, there's a
wealth of articulations, the programming is exceptional, and the transfer
to the EXS worked flawlessly. The documentation is in a class of its own,
really. BTW, there's a HUGE difference between the light and the full
version - don't hesitate to go for the full if you can afford it. All the
we in EXS-land are missing is the sample crossfade option... but I'm sure
we'll get it in a future upgrade.

If a grand seems a lot to you, consider that 5 years ago, I bought the
Denny Jaegger Violin library for the same price - it offers only violins,
and half of the 3-cd set (versus 18 cds for GOS) is made up of lower
quality versions of the samples for ram-limited samplers. Oh, and don't get
me started on what the Miroslav Vitous library will give you for that same
grand...

Thanks a lot, Ned. This email will probably cost me a thousand
bucks. Would you mind explaining this to my wife?

Velocity cross fading works fine once you fiddle with it a bit.
Problem is the velocity ranges don't get imported correctly from .gig
files so once you adjust this, just choose Control 1 in the mod matrix
for sample select, slap a bit of crossfading on it and you're good to
go.

Virtual MaestroTools also works fine with the EXS for both the LEG and
ALT patches. The WARM patches, i dunno, never used them. No reason
why you couldn't use the EXS filters to achieve the same thing.

Just received the new GOS update this week. The new KI Hollywood
strings patch is kinda whack with the built in giga conversion but I'm
sure those 3rd party programs will do a better job... or else a little
editing is needed...

Hey Ned,

Are you getting error messages about missing samples or just plain
weirdness? I converted the .gig files in OSX, which handles longer
file names no problem. But there is some strangeness in the
conversions... some notes are mapped to different pitched samples at
different velocity levels. I've found some screwy loops too. And it
seems some of the programs aren't using the fancy attack thresholds and
whatnot that King spent so long on!! Lemme know how the CDXtract
conversion goes, eh?

cheers,

Mike

Well...I'm not Ned,

But when I translated the Hollywood strings I got major screwups. Most
if not all...can't remember...were completely unusable. It was so
messy I figured I'd just wait on them. I did the translation in OSX
and I tried translation with Translator with little success as well.
Translator requires OS9...but I don't think the long name problem is an
issue with Translator...either way...no luck? It sounds like you're
having better luck than I did. The same sample was assigned to every
pitch...so loops and attacks weren't in the picture yet. Did you use
the Logic converter or Translator? Thanks.

Julie

Hi Ned, Julie, Mike and others,

from my betatesting, I know that Chicken Systems is working hard
on an OSX version of Translator. For sure, Garth will be happy
about input regarding conversion topics.

So maybe you'd like to contact him at support@...?

Garth is very responsive to questions and I am quite sure he
will check what can be done.

All the best,
Thomas

I have a better idea, Nikko: why don't you try it yourself? It's
simple - just get a book on programming, sit down at your keyboard,
and start typing out code.
