downloadable gig files mac compatible?

downloadable gig files mac compatible?

2002-09-10 by Jon Esler

Sorry for asking such a mundane question, but whenever I have down loaded
any of the gig files posted it here it shows up as a simpltext doc in the
finder. This makes me think its PC only. Any help? I'm on OS 9.2.2,
G4 500DP. I've tried Stuffit Expander on the rar files without luck as
well. Also tried putting them in the Sampler Instruments folder and they
are not recognized.
                                        Thanks, Jon Esler

Julie and Jon,

Although the .gig files do show up as SimpleText files, EXS _will_
recognize them. This is how I have dealt with the Garritan String
Orchestra, and the free G-Town .gig files I've downloaded:

1. drag the file from cd or from your desktop into your Sampler Instruments
folder
2. If Logic is already running, don't forget to hit 'refresh list' in your
EXS, or else it won't know that you've added a new file to your instrument list
3. select your new .gig instrument, and wait while EXS 'translates' the data
4. voila
5. consider getting rid of the original .gig file, as Logic has just made
an EXS version of that data in a folder called 'DLS-Giga Samples', so you
now have one too many files (and .gig files do tend to take up a lot of
room - I deleted almost 6 gigs of doubled files this morning...)

Don't be nervous about the fact that they are Txt files. The important
thing, I think, is the .gig extension at the end of the names of the files.

As for the .rar compression format, you can deal with it easily with
MacRar: http://macrar.free.fr/

Ned

PS: when, I wonder, will we get a new EXS manual update?

I unstuffed the .rar files (StuffIt Expander works). I noticed that they
are .gig files, but they have names longer than 31 characters. This goofs
up the ability for EXS to see it, although it does have the .gig extension.
Translator couldn't see it as a .gig file either, at first.

The truncation puts a ... in the middle of the file and the point 15. At
this point any of these programs stops reading the file name, thus missing
the .gig extension, and thus not being able to be "seen." I guess this is a
bug or something.

(BTW, there's no File Type defined for Giga, since it's a PC generated
format, so it's just the extension that identifies it as a Gig file.)

I tried renaming them back to 31 chars with the .gig extension, but at
first that didn't work. The I renamed them back to PanCresc.gig and
PanStac-Flutr.gig, before the ..., respectively. This solved the issue -
loaded fine, of course with the "errors" Ned pointed out.

Re: [exs] downloadable gig files mac compatible?

Thanks to everyone who replied to my question. After downloading the
current version of Stuffit Expander I was able to expand the .rar files and
they then were converted to.exs files easily. The .gig files at the G-town
site took a little more effort so I¹ll post a ³how to² message for the
archives since Emagics instructions are so brief.

                                        All the best, Jon Esler
