first post - #of audio instruments

2002-09-25 by morganpackard

Hello all. This is my first post to this list. I'm looking forward to
checking out what you all have to say. I have simple question
that I'm sure lots of you can answer - I seem to be able to create
16 audio instrument tracks (each running an instance of the
exs), but can't figure out how to assign additional tracks to
instruments 17 and up. Is there a limit to the number of
instruments I can use? Is there something tricky I've
overlooked?

thanks

oops! a week has gone by and I haven't responded to this yet.
I'm using logic 4.0, I think. And it's, um, a crack.

Re: [exs] first post - #of audio instruments

2002-10-03 by morganpackard

Dear list,

I'd like to do what I can to make this situation right. I'm not an
entirely bad person. I'm in the process of moving from being a
completely amateur musician to being a more professional one,
and wasn't aware of how stupid I was being. Obviously I am
aware now. I hope that you can all have an open attitude toward
me as an individual (I'm not asking you to accept software
piracy). I'm relatively young, I'm naive, I'm actually looking for
good role models, and am hoping to connect with some of them
on this list. It seems I've started out in just about the worst
possible way.

I had origianlly thought that joining this community would be a
good occasion to pay for the software I use (sounds weak, I
know, but there's some truth in it), and that I would be around
people dissaproving of, but not to the point of prosecution, of
using pirated software. I anticipated that being around a more
professional group of people would encourage me to act in a
more professional manner. I obviously vastly underestimated
the degree to which you people take this seriously. I will order
copies of logic and esx24 today. I will also strongly encourage
anyone I encounter in the future who uses software without
paying for it to immediately stop doing so. This has already
been a scary experience for me, and, if I'm not misreading your
posts, this is not the end of it.

Lastly, if it's not too late, please work with me here, rather than
against me. If any of you would like to give me a word or two of
kindly advice, feel free to contact me at
morgan@.... You can, of course, also use that
email for spam.

thank you

Morgan,

Very gutsy post, my friend. Your frankness is almost as endearing as your
eloquence. I, for one, think you deserve a second chance.

Good luck with your new software. Come here for help when you get the legit
deal.

Ned,

Your words are encouraging, but have not quieted my churning
stomach! My open honesty is both my biggest virtue and my
biggest flaw (been more of a flaw lately). Thank you, Ned, for
your acceptance. I'm going to go call Sweetwater now.

I would love to read people's thoughts on the ethical, legal, and
practical aspects of intellectual property. I'm very open to
reforming myself (have always planned to, just never got around
to it), and it's nice if I feel like I'm doing it out of more than simple
fear!

A word of advice : Unless you plan to use TDM or Logic-control or need
one of the (5?) extra plugins, you'll most likely find that Logic Gold
is the best deal for you as its a lot cheaper than platinum. If you look
around second hand you can probably buy a cheap copy of the old Gold v4
Gold+EXS bundle for very little cash, and upgrade to v5 for not much
more. FAR cheaper than buying both new.

Check the archives of this group and the logic-users group for more
discussions on pirated logic than you can shake a stick at. No new ones
please, they're far too emotionally charged and bad for Karma.... The
bottom line : If you like/need a piece of software enough to use it, the
developers deserve to get paid for their work in bringing it to you.
Simple.

Simple: LOTS of work goes into the software we love and need to use. The
people deserve to be paid for their time and energy. "There's no free

It is stealing to use bootlegged software.

The only thing to do is to make sure you get the dongle with the package
as well as the original CDs as you have to send them back to emagic for
the v5 upgrade.

If buying an unregistered copy, life is easy - just send in the
registration. If buying a previously registered copy, get the seller to
write a letter to the distributor with their customer number saying that
they have sold it to you, and your distributor will inform emagic of the
change of ownership. Thats how I got my Gold+EXS and saved masses. Its a
little hassle ok, but the money I saved went towards more new gear :-)

Thanks for the idea. Gold is the one I was looking at, but I hadn't
thought of buying it used.

Is there anything shady about buying used software? Is this
frowned upon by anyone? I'm in no mood buy a sort-of legal, or
sort-of legit piece of software.

Good/best Horn Section library

2002-10-03 by Aron Nelson

I'm looking for opinions on a great horn section library. I mean for
pop/jazz type settings. Of course "best" is subjective, but since
many of you have so much more experience with sampled libraries, I
thought I would ask this list.

Is it even possible?

Right now I use my VL1, but it would be great if I could layer with a
good library.

Thanks,

Second chance granted to Morgan - because I just remembered I'm a
disgruntled PC user, and wouldn't recommend anyone to buy the PC version of
Logic - even second hand.

If you're a MAC user, go legit, buy second hand, and you'll probably find a
few PC users who have taken the free MAC cross grade, and now want to sell
Logic to you for about half price (so you'll get both platforms)
In my experience, the only place you get support on Logic is here - so I
shouldn't worry about what Apple think about "second hand" software users.

If you're a PC user, definitely buy SX. The cracked versions have bugs (be
warned), and I think if you're a new user, you will get up to speed faster
if you go for an application written for your platform...

plus it jacks up the price for us honest users! imagine how muany more
people emagic would be able to hire to work on, say, making sample accurate
editing in the arrange window if people didn't rip them off? There must be a
million of *you* people, Morgan, and there's only 200,000 registered users
of Logic.

Anyway, Morgan, sorry I called you a moron, I was pissed off at your
retarded announcement. do you write songs? what if Metallica did your song
on their CD and didn't pay you? you would be pissed right? don't be
surprised if you get a subpeona from Emagic's lawyers about this, just like
your lawyer would send Metallica if they ripped off your song!

maybe you don't make enough money to afford logic. that's ok, there's always
Micro Logic!

Teddybut

P.S. I used Metallica as an example. I am in no way suggesting that
Metallica would rip anyone off.

I would be interested to hear other peoples opinions on buying used
software. When I first started this stuff I bought a used copy of Performer
5.0. When I called MOTU for technical help they were definitely not
supportive of the practice. Maybe things have changed since then?

plus it jacks up the price for us honest users! imagine how muany more
people emagic would be able to hire to work on, say, making sample accurate
editing in the arrange window if people didn't rip them off?

I just bought Virus TDM used and it sounds the same as the original!

but seriously... I think the companies are starting to realize that buying
used software is better than piracy because at least they get you on the
next upgrade. They would be stupid to snarl at used sales.

I've bought all of my TDM plugins S/Hand. Otherwise it would be
prohibitively expensive to go TDM.

But then my HD rig was S/H also.

Well, actually a new system- the previous owner upgraded from Mix to HD
and then sold the HD unopened to me.
None of my apps are S/H though.

Thanks to all of you for your posts. I especially enjoyed the ones
which conveyed a forgiving and supportive attitude!

I'm going to go ahead and buy new copies of logic (gold) and the
exs. I've found a place that seems to have logic 4.7 in stock, for
$300 (zzounds.com). I' may do that , or may just buy version 5.

I don't think I'll look for a used copy, because, honestly, Emagic
deserves my money. I felt that way before my fateful post to this
list, and still feel the same.

I'd like to offer my apologies once again for what, in retrospect,
was a truly ridiculous attempt at entry to a very knowledgable and
experienced community. Sometimes things come accross all
wrong over the internet; sometimes truly stupid people reveal
themselves as such. I'll leave it up to all of you to decide which
category my posts have fallen under, but I hope you'll all give me
a little time to redeem myself before you make your minds up for
good.

If any of you have anything else you'd like to say, I encourage to
email me on this subject off-list at
morgan@....

Sincerely,

Morgan Packard

5 blows away 4. No comparison in my opinion and well worth the extra money.

Yeah but you cant buy a v5 Gold + EXS pack. Its far cheaper to buy the
v4+EXS pack and then the upgrade to v5 as well.
