Huh, what are .art files? I never heard of them... who invented this format?

Btw, I'd prefer the EXS would convert AKAI diskbased filetypes as well...
(plus some other formats, such as HALion and Kontakt - if those companies
can do it vice versa I can't see a reason why the EXS shouldn't be able to
do it as well).

Giga articulation files are pretty much just the .gig file without the
samples. I think they can contain samples but I haven't seen any with them.
Whatever the case, you need the original .gig files for them to work.

Most companies use it as a handy way to add updates to their usually huge
.gig files in an easy downloadable way. It's not perfect - there is a
third-party articulation variant and program at Best Service - check it out.

Maybe one of the third-party convertor companies will do that and the other
things you mention.

articulation files...don't know about the inventer but basically, it's like
a program update...if you have Gigasampler you can load these file into and
existing file or merge them with a file to improve the performance...not so
sure how it works as I don't own Gigasampler. I have received updates to my
Dan Dean libraries and Garritan strings...sigh...
