How to verify my hard drive (sample library) is copied correctly?

How to verify my hard drive (sample library) is copied correctly?

2003-03-18 by roman pirie

want to copy my 9Gig sample library to another drive and then erase the
source drive. Is there a way to verify the copy as I am Paranoid about this
uncountable man hours worth of sample collection.
I'm in the process of getting a DVD writer which I will be using for back
ups. But it would be good to be able to verify the copy.
I suppose if I was smart enough I could use retrospect to copy to the other
drive then verify the copy.

You could also use Retrospect backup software that can verify its backup
work and offers a report on any problems that may have occurred during the
transfer. I recommend using the duplicate drive method rather than backing
up to a compressed Retrospect format. -Jer

Instrument editor improvements

2003-03-19 by Murray McDowall

One of the frustrating limitations of the editor is the lack of key
commands to associate selected samples with a group. The Natural sound kit
V6 version I downloaded was the Gig version which is comprised of mono
files -- over 500 of them. Unfortunately none are associated with a group
so you would need to individually assign the zones( 500+ times) to groups
to achieve a multi out kit.

Alternatively you could rebuild the instrument and import the drum wavs in
stages -- eg all the snare files imported together and they would
automatically be associated with a group BUT then you would need to
reprogram the velocity switching -- even more fiddly work.

The "load multiple sample" routines and the keycommands to move selected
samples with or without shifting the root notes are a godsend but a few
improvements like the above and making parameter changes affect all
selected zones would save a lot of unnecessary work.

Murray

I'm sick of this too. We need global control over all elements. PERIOD.

PS: Logic 6 kicks major booty!!!!!!!!! -Jer

not sure if booty means good or bad, but if it does mean good/great i have
to 100% disagree. v6 is the worst and most malfunctioning payable upgrade i
ever experienced on os 9 (and i have been here from the start).

sorry to say that.

how can a company being part of apple release a software where basic apple
gui elements are broken?

sorry again, i paid for 6, but i am using 5.5 untill they fix that v6.

agree, long overdue.
(as much as a manual rewrite..., not funny anymore)

kick booty means good. Sorry to hear of your trouble. Works perfectly here.
Amazing improvement all around. Have you tried to reinstall yet?

This has not been my experience.
I have LAP 6 with EXS installed on two machines. One running 9.2.2 and
another running 10.2.4.
The upgrade is wonderful. No problems and MANY improvements.
AND
Lack of global controls in EXS and in particular over groups is a REAL
big problem for me.
According to tech support this is being addressed. I hope soon!

Select all the zones then while holding the option key (Mac) assign the
group from the pop-down menu
and presto all the zones will be assigned to that group.

This also works for turning on Loop and velocity zone

If I were you, I would backup everything to CD-R or DVD or a 3rd hard
drive before wiping my original drive.
To verify the copy, I would look at the used space of the copy, to check
that it matches the source drive/folder exactly, at the byte level.

Thanks for posting this tip Robert. I'm sure it will assist everyone who has a
version where this works. What version of LAM was this?

Unfortunately it does not apply to LAWP 5.5.1. -- I tried every key combination
of Ctrl, Alt, Shift etc and no dice. If this works in LAM 5.5 it would not be
the first time the editor had features implemented on the Mac that weren't
working on PC.

Perhaps someone with LAM might take the trouble to use this facility to build a
multi-out version of the Natural Sound kit V6. I wanted to do this with LAW but
got discouraged by the size of the job of assigning 500 plus samples to groups
one at a time.

If you are game you could start by importing the Gig file version into EXS
(which is built from mono files -- the EXS version recently uploaded by another
user is built from the stereo files which are also downloadable) and then
assigning the various drum types (Snare, Kick, Hats, Toms, Cymbals say) to
groups.

Murray
