PLEASE HELP Akai and EXS24

PLEASE HELP Akai and EXS24

2003-04-08 by s007ing

New to logic and exs24mkII(running logic 5.5 OSX, powerbook 1ghz
processor, 1 gig ram), but knowing that logic and the exs24 can use
akai format samples, I purchased a few akai sample cd's. Upon trying
to install them, my mac can't even read the cd's. Looking through the
documentation, the exs instruction book says to go to the options tab
in the exs window, then go to "akai import" (I will mention my
frustration with the instruction book that came with the exs, as it is
for version 4.7 and clearly not up-to-date) Needless to say, there is
no akai import option, there is import gig, dls, samplecell,
soundfont, etc, but no akai.

I am tempted to get cdxtract, but the problem remains that if my
computer can't even read the cd's ("this disk contains no volumes
readable by OSX..." and OS9 won't read it either) how would I get the
program to convert the samples to .exs format!? Clearly I am missing
something here : )

Thanks in adavnce for your help...

Peter

Akai CDs can currently only be converted in OS9 and not in X. So
boot in OS 9, fire up Logic and open an EXS instance. Pick the "AKAI
import" option from (I believe) the Options menu. You'll then get a
window saying "waiting for akai cd". Only *then* insert the CD in
the computer. The rest will be obvious from thereon.
Inserting the CD prior to launching Logic, etc, will let the Mac OS
take over, and since Mac OS can't deal with Akai CDs, you'll indeed
get the 'disk unreadable' message, or some variation thereof.

OSX cannot mount or read your Akai CDs but CDXtract can read them
anyway. CDXtract OSX is a pure OSX version that does not need
Classic to run. Get CDXtract and you will be able to read your Akai
(even mixed mode Akai), Roland, Emu3, Emu4, MPC and Kurzweil
disks on your OSX system and convert them to the EXS format.

Yes, absolutely lousy. How can you expect people to fully embrace the
future (MacOS X) when you can't even import the great majority of
sample CD-Roms (AKAI-format)? I really don't understand this.
