I finally got around to trying the
"Logic/helper/IO-muted-2nd-processor" trick, but I don't notice any
change whatsoever in the system performance meter when I try this. I
tried it on a processor-killing timpani patch in EXS24, and placed
before an instance of Waves Ren. Reverb on a bus. No change with or
without it. Has anyone noticed a change with virtual instruments using
this technique?

Did you put a valid in and output in the I/O plugin? You could also try
puting the I/O plugin on the tracks that are actually sending to the
bus instead. Or create an input object of an unused input and put a
bypassed send there. The send should be to the bus where you have your
reverb.

You have to designate in input and output, even though they aren't used when
the plugin is deactivated. -Jer

Actually, probably works with just the output set. UAD-1 instructions said
both, but setting the output only has worked for me, as mentioned by another
list member in answer to the question. -Jer

As I understand it, this technique does not work for soft-synth
plug-ins; Emagic or otherwise.
I've noticed increased performance with WAVES and Emagic FX Plug-ins.
No change with EXS24, ES2, ES1 or EVOC20
