Archiving Sampler Instruments - 3 questions

Archiving Sampler Instruments - 3 questions

2001-03-31 by Roger Jackson

The Update info says that "Sample Instruments can now be archived on
a per-project basis"

Anyone know how to do this? I got the KC to copy all the EXS audio
files, that's great, but how to do the Instrument files?

Another thing from the info sheet - "New "find" functionality allows
search via key words" - does this mean find only within the Sampler
Instruments folder in the Logic Audio folder?

And "Automated search over network volumes possible" Anyone know how
to do this? And how is it "automated"?

Sorry, haven't tried this out yet but I can help with the other Qs below.

Yes AFAIK - if you type "piano" in the "find" box, all instruments or
subdirectories inside the sampler instrument folder which include the word
"piano" will show up in a list at the bottom of the instrument selector.
They only become visible when it is opened. It seems a little strange to
type in the floating box which then disappears and then have to open the
instrument selector to see the results but it does work.

On PC it works like this:

Open the EXS instrument editor and in the Edit menu you above will find
Preferences,
There is a new preference for "Search Samples on" with options as follows:
local volumes, external volumes, all volumes A, B C D etc

Thanks for the replies Murray, but what is "Automated" about it?

When you first open a sampler instrument file (something.exs) Logic looks
for the audio files that are specified in the exs instument definition --
which you might have downloaded from a web site or installed from a CD or
moved from another machine.

Before 4.7, this search started automatically. On my PC it searched my
system drive first (waste of time) and then my audio drive where it
eventually found the files. The path to these files is then saved
automatically with the instrument file and next time you open it they are
loaded automatically.

Now, with 4.7, you can choose to specify which drive Logic will search (eg
your Audio Drive) or to extend the search to network drives if that suits
your setup. The search only occurs when Logic doesn't already know where to
find the files and is "automated" in the sense that it doesn't start by
giving you a dialog box with a [browse] button so that you can direct the
program "manually" to the folder where the files can be found.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
