EXS 24 Logic Sampler Users Group

Hello Group,

is it possible to use more than 15.000 EXS Instruments? When i reach this number of files, it is not possible to open the EXS menue in windows XP and in windows 98 a lot of instruments do not appear. There seems to be a limit of files for the EXS in logic or in the operating system. 

Does anyone also have this problem or has someone a solution for me?

While I don't know wether the limit is around 15.000 there certainly
is a limit to the size of a menu. If I recall it correctly the ID
of a menu entry (used by the windowing system to indicate which
particular entry had been selected) is a 16bit number thus allowing
for a theoretical maximum of 65000 distinguishable menu-entries.

It doesn't seem far fetched to assume that the range reserved for
EXS Instruments does not span the full theoretically possible range.

Do you *always* need all your 15.000 instruments or could you
preselect some by moving those you don't need (temporarily) into
a different directory ?

Or in other words:
Assuming there is a maximum number of instruments and this is
around 15.000 than I suppose you have no choice other than using
a subset of your instruments possibly selected on a case by case
basis.

I have an alias of the VSL's EXS Sampler Instruments folder inside my 
regular Sampler Instruments folder (the one in the same folder as 
Logic). That makes the drop-down list manageable (you get a single 
VSL entry until you mouse over it and the  contents of the VSL folder 
pop up to the side), and it might even be letting me get around 
having over 1 billion instruments!

And I promise I didn't think of this in advance - it was a pure luck!

(Or pure bad luck, perhaps, since it takes 15 minutes to read the 
Project Manager database and sort out the tree every time I open the 
PM window?)

I have found reudcing the number of folders helps.  Sometimes the 
Akai convert creates a folder for each instrument.  Thinning this out 
seems to let you see and select the instruments again.
