LAM, OSX - ESX24 showing instruments but not loading

2003-07-19 by pobrien5769

Hi all,
I have finally started converting all my Akai CD-Roms to ESX using CD Xtract,
I had about 7GB of ESX instruments/samples beforehand, and all was o.k,
then after the second session of converting (I checked each Akai convert in
ESX by loading after each CD convert). I started a third convert session and
now my instruments all show in the menu, but when I click/select an
instrument nothing happens (no loading, nothing). Still getting the '---' in the
menu. I can load instruments in Edit menu, but when playing only getting sine
default... and instrument name still the '---'. Any suggestions?

I have read some ESX loading issues with a large number of instrument/
sampler files, have I hit this limit? and is there a work around? - I only have
ever used aliased 'Sampler Instruments' and 'Akai Samples' folders in the
original Logic 6 app folder.

I have deleted Logic & PM prefs/re-scan PM (long time!), and removed all of
my 'aliased' ESX/samples from the Logic app folder, and still no joy.

I will keep trying, but any similar experiences out there?

yours

The thing to watch out for when converting from Akai discs is that due
to the nature of the partitian system on Akai CD roms and also some
rather short sited programming from the manufactureres. Akai discs
often have samples with the same name on. When you convert a lot of
discs it is easy to end up with a very confussed ESX when several
different sample instruments are looking for samples with the same
name. I.E. Great Kick or fat snare. Some times it's better to convert
your Akai discs to disc images and leave them on your hard drive.
Catalog them with Cd extract and then only pull off what you need.
Also bear in mind that you need the full version of CD extract to do
this properly.

Thanks for the info Rupert,
This has been the method I have been using for some time - I just wanted to
have everything converted to ESX without having to filter via CDXTract. I have
managed a work around - just put an 'alias' of program folder inside a Real
folder of ESX Instruments - rather than putting an 'alias' of, for example
'Drums' containing hundreds of programs?? It works, and I'm very happy.
Thanks again
