short delay & then a burst of samples

When I select a new instrument for an EXS24 while theres a song playing as soon as the instument loads I get a short delay & then a burst of samples played by logic at a high midi velocity. Very discocerting for the client - not to mention my poor nearfield monitors. I use Logic 4.8 Gold on a Mac G4 dual 500mhz with AMT8. Whats causing this?
