I'm not impressed of the demo of the EVP88 on the Emagic-site. Especially not the dynamics. Maybe it's just the (mp3) demo..... What do you recommend? Buy the EVP 88 or buy a sample CD of a Fender Rhodes piano for my EXS24. Rob

As someone deciding on switching from DP to Logic primarily for softsynth integration, can you explain why you felt you needed to purchase Kontakt in addition to EXS24? Is the EXS24 not everything it's cracked up to be? In a related matter, is anyone here considering MachFive to replace/supplement EXS24? If so, I'd be curious to know why. many thanks in advance, brian

I got the Scarbee Rhodes sample. It is humungous and ram eating but a wicked sample. simon

Being one of those screwed PC users I'm slowly moving to Cubase (it's actually better then it used to be but my working style is so adjusted to using Logic...). My EVP88 is one of the few things I have not yet found a replacement for. If only Emagic would release a VST Version of it... At first glance it seems worth a try. Is there a demoversion available somewhere ? I have not been able to find one on the cakewalk site. Or has anybody tried a comparison between the two and would share his/her findings ? They are favourable in general, although the first edition didn't sound too clean imo. Herbert Boland www.zepmusic.com

Magnetica was recommended to me. It pales in comparison to the EVP88. EVP is the best rhodes I've heard. Plus you get many different electric pianos, wurlitzer etc. Peace. --

Re: Mach Five,
This was posted by Ed Hamilton on the Northern Sounds Forum last night:
"I would love to be posting an in depth review of Mach 5.
Instead this is a WARNING!!!
Mach 5 uses a dongle.
Huge drag. Like we needed one more in our lives.
So I install Mach 5. All goes seemingly well.
I go to launch Logic. At first everything seemed fine but no midi would get
routed to mach 5.
If you click on the picture of the keyboard on its main page it played
perfectly, but no midi.
I restart my Mac.
The Mach 5 uses a program called interlock for the dongle.
The installation of Mach 5s dongle CONFLICTS with MY PROTOOLS ILOCK.
Completely. Kaput.
I lost all my plug in authorizations.
3 hours and I can't get them back nor can I figure out what the heck happened.
ALL OF THEM. Done. gone.
It will take me days to get this fixed.
I am infuriated beyond belief.
Be very carefull. "
Yikes!

I think the Wurlitzer on Magnetica sounds more like the real thing than the EVP-model. The simple version that comes on the EXS24 bonus cd-rom is even more realistic than the EVP-model. But that's just about the Wurlitzer (that i've always been a fan of), nothing about the Rhodes. I am a Wurlitzer player from way back, as well as the Rhodes. Still own them both, tho they are both in storage at the moment. I fell the they really got it right with the EVP 88 as far as the Rhodes goes. But the Wurlitzer just isn't right. It really sounds like a variation of the Rhodes. The attitude and bite of the original are just not there. That being said, all the are of really high quality. Gary Pozner www.whirledmusic.com

just listen to the demos and there's no way you could prefer the EVP over this, at least as far as sounding authentic.... http://www.scarbee.com/rsp73/index.html

Hi, In the end of August I will release Scarbee W.E.P (Wurlitzer 200A) For Halion, EXS24 mk II, Kontakt and Giga. 16 velocities of all notes + 16 release velocities of each note. As I did with the Rhodes - Scarbee R.S.P. 73 - the playability of the Wurlitzer will be like the real thing. I love Wurlitzer.... --- In exs-users@yahoogroups.com, "Gary Pozner" <garypozner@w...> wrote: > I am a Wurlitzer player from way back, as well as the Rhodes. Hi group, I don't know if this has been documented before but here is a neat trick I discovered this morning. 1. In environment: assign EXS to a track. 2. Load an instrument. 3. In arrange: enable TBA on this track and pick something to automate, e.g. filter cutoff. 4. Now press "+" sign repeatedly on your numeric keyboard: you will see all the possible automation CC-numbers/names pass by. For that matter the minus sign decreases the value. 5. Continue until you see "Instrument". This is the fun part: at the bottom of the parameter pane you'll see the loaded instrument. 6. Now use your mouse to click, hold and drag to browse and prelisten all of your instruments! Or automate them... Btw, I'm on LA Gold 5.5.1 win. Thanks for your thoughts/comments. (Hendrik Jan: maybe add this to section 18 in the FAQ.) Herbert www.zepmusic.com

Dunno if it's quite the same thing as what you've discovered, but it is documented that the last value you changed in the Arrange window can be increased and decreased with the + and - keys. Unless they've been assigned to something else, that is. Holding shift at the same time gives you steps of 10.

Bill, no I talked about the parameter itself, not the values! The point is that the parameter "instrument" is not advertised as something that can be addressed in TBA. Have a look, I can't find it in the pop-up lists. But it is actually there, it's more or less hidden and the only way you can reach is by pressing the + or - sign repeatedly. Here is a screenshot of the result: http://www.zeppelin.demon.nl/Ztudio/ks/EXS_instrument_in_TBA.gif > 1. In environment: assign EXS to a track. > 2. Load an instrument. > 3. For scrolling through instruments there _is_ a dedicated key command (next/prev EXS instrument). I suppose you're aware of that. However, those KCs require you to have the EXS open, which your trick avoids -- and that's neat indeed. But... I just tried, and the trick you describe is working in a strange way... When having the 'Instrument' parameter active, dragging the vertical bar next to the track name will scroll through _all_ your EXS programs (or: drag the bar, and then use numeric +/- for fine-scrolling). That's amazing, as I've got over 5000 EXS instruments, and you can access them all individually this way. However, for automation this is useless, as automation is limited to 128 values. When you try it, it seems automation takes big steps through the available instruments -- like increasing automation from value=1 to value=2 will change the EXS from instruments 120 to 260 or something. Despite the fact that the trick is somewhat surprising, I wonder how useful it really is in practice -- except that it gives you a way to scroll through the EXS instruments without having to have an EXS instance open to receive the dedicated key commands. -- Hendrik Jan Veenstra h @ k n o w a r e . n l Omega Art: http://www.omega-art.com/

No, it's not. My guess is that it simply takes the number of all available EXS instruments, divides that by 128, and takes the resulting number as the "step size". So if you had some 12800 (128 x 100) instruments, each parameter increment (+1) would step to the current program + 100 >>Despite the fact that the trick is somewhat surprising, I wonder how >>useful it really is in practice -- except that it gives you a way to >>scroll through the EXS instruments without having to have an EXS >>instance open to receive the dedicated key commands. > >HB: Agreed, but it makes browsing within a family of sounds more easy. >And you have a clear label in arrange with the loaded instrument name...
