Is there any kind of firmware upgrade (I already have v3.0.0.a) that
can alter what the On/Summed/Bypass option controls? If not, is it
possible to have it electronically/mechanically edited and if so, do
you happen to know any engineers who can pull this off?

I understand your problem. The only
solution I can recommend is to include a MIDI-controlled audio signal
router/switcher in your setup. An expensive example of one of these
devices is the Voodoo Labs / DMC GCX. These are one of the few that are
still being manufactured and there are several currently being auctioned on
eBay. I use an older, discontinued, but just as effective Ibanez EPP-400
for duties such as this. You can occasionally see these on eBay
also.
To solve your problem, you would insert your
MIDI-controlled switcher in the GSP-2101's effect loop and, depending on the
patch you are currently using, the switcher would either include or bypass your
echo unit. Of course, these switchers are capable of a lot more than this
simple application, but it'll get the job done without having to alter the
bowels of your GSP-2101.
