Personally, I dont have any excessive noise with my 2101 - and the 
distortion is very good.  Maybe you need to put in some new tubes?

I run the 2101 thru a marshall 8008 power amp and then into a couple 
1960b cabs - sounds great with no hum on any of the presets.
