Tips on upgrading/using my 2101

2007-02-23 by Paul Williams

Greetings all -

After many years of passively letting all of my gear and guitars
collect dust in my basement, I am starting to go thru and set up all
my equipment and start doing some long overdue maintenance on all of
my gear and start using it for performing live again after a long
break.

I started taking the approach that I needed to replace my 2101 with
either a new rack pre-amp (i was looking at mesa and rocktron
equipment, it seems to be the most praised and popular right now), or
replacing my preamp poweramp combo with a amp head like a dual
rectifier (I have a mesa simul 2:90 power amp). But, quite frankly
was suprised at the number folks who are still using the 2101, and
how much information there was out on the internet, and the active
groups discussing the 2101!! (I figured that it was to old and out-
dated piece of equipment that no one used anymore).

So I started thinking to myself that I should look into upgrading the
software and/or hardware in my 2101, and seriously starting to learn
how to program the thing and see if can get some more practical use
of it.

Here is my first step in this whole process:

I am going to upgrade my hardware and software from the current
version runnning V1.01.01 @ 10Mhz to V3.00.00.a @ 20Mhz - I have
purchased the components from Dieter (from what I have read online,
he is the bonified GSP2101 expert/guru of the world!) to perform this
upgrade.

After I make this upgrade - I will look into possibly upgrading with
PPC210 board (barring that I can find one, but it appears that they
pop up now and again on eBay).

I am also interested in getting and utilizing someting like the
MIDIWizard software to enable me to interface a PC with my 2101 to
upload/download/dump/edit patches and algorithms, along with getting
some patches available from other 2101 users that I can try out and
experiment with.

Other thngs that I am intrested in hearing from other users:

Suggestions for tubes - the main jist I think you get from this is
just try different ones until you like what you hear.

How does the MIDIWizard software work with the 2101 and where can I
get this and try it out? Do I have to be upgraded to the 'Artist'
version to use this? Do I need to add a special interface card on the
computer that I going to use with this?

What About the battery? I have the original battery in my 2101 from
over 13 years ago, common sense tells me to replace this. What
happens when you remove the battery and/or the battery goes dead?

Anyone who has any words of wisdom/advice/comments/suggestions for me
would be greatly appriciated!!

Thanks for reading my short novel!!

i am not a studio musician(but was in a touring Kiss tribute act and
have been playing guitar since 1981),but i have had about every
piece of guitar gear/rack/amps under the sun! i still love my 2101Le
(my fav piece!)(amp chioce will make or break its sound!)i currently
use a Marshall 9200(like 80lbs lol!)and it sounds smokin! i'm like u
as i don't think i'm squeezing all the tone and all out of it! one
post stated that it will sound alot better by adding the bigger
Eq.into the algorythms, and also im curious on how to download other
ppls settings into mine as the r links on a cpl of site that have
the info? i think u can remove the battery in like a few seconds/mins
(maybe)and still not lose any info(but check for sure)i also believe
you have to hit factory reset after u install things like ppc 210
card?(so back everything up!)if u want give me a call(814)673-0515
as i have several links regarding these units! and i hate to type
loL! hope i was of help and i thank the others who have helped me!

All the information you need on the 2101 is at www.gsp2101.noisytoyz.com. The midiwizzard software link is there as well.

Enjoy.

hey i was just wondering how i go about(from step 1 lol!) to loading presets off sites like noiseytoyz ect ect? it states that most sound cards have midi connection( i own like 5 different cards) and none of them have midi on them? do i need a special card/adapter?? or am i just missing something in the nozytoyz notes? i know u probably get bombarded w/ questions, but do u happen to have a # where i could reach u to help explain the procedure? i'm currently using a 2101Le 3.00 artist software version! i currently don't have any patches saved on it yet as i sold my 2101 artist to get this one and could care less about the stock presets so i would love to load it up with some real world usable presets for a better starting point for my own later on! if u don't wanna give out your # i'll give u mine(814)673-0515 i'm not the most technologically deficiant person in the world, but obviously not the best either lol! just to fill u in as i'm not some begginer guitarist(played for about 25yrs)and recently came from one of the worlds biggest national Kiss tribute acts! (i only mentioned all this as i know u probably get swamped w/questions from young kids just starting out!??)i think these units sound killer thru a marshall 9200 and 4x12 cab! i have a carvin ts100 on its way(hope it can do it some justice?)the 9200 was just too much weight and the Mesa 20/20 was too much$$ and the Mesa 50/50 made the 2101 sound bad for some reason?)lond story short i wanna figure out what i gotta do to load in a bunch of new presets??(didn't totally understand the info on dieters site and nozytoyz? plus i was concerned that there could b problems if u used the wrong program to load this stuff ect ect?? thanks Jim M

I was in the same boat that you were in , I just updated my 2101 from
Version 1.01.01 to 3.00.00.a - I can't believe that I didn't do this
sooner! What a difference! As far as loading patches off of the
internet, No problem, you do need to have a midi connection, and I
actually am using a pc running windows 98ME which is perfect because
it has a 15 pin gameport in the soundcard that has MIDI compatibility
in the driver so all I had to do was get a simple gameport to midi
cable I got from ebay for $5.00 and plugged it into my PC and GSP2101,
I got the MIDIWizard software to interface between my pc and 2101
Worked right away, no problems!! I haven't used any of the other
software available to interface with the GSP2101, but my gut feeling
is that they are not as easy to use as MIDIWizard. (If you want to
have a MIDI interface into a USB port you have to buy an adapter that
interface the MIDI protocol and it costs more money)

The MIDIWizard makes it real simple to load patches onto your 2101
(.syx files) - I went out to noizytoyz and pulled down the Eruption
syx file and loaded up onto my 2101 and when I played I couldn't
believe it!! (HOLY S*#$! - it sounds just like the album!!)

Anyways thats my experience, I don't think you will have any problems
if you take a little time and play around with the stuff - good luck!!

I agree. Midiwizard is a killer program. It is so easy to use it is amazing. I have an Edirol UM-2 Midi interface which I got on ebay pretty cheap. It was easy to set up and works great. If you need any help with some setup, just let me know. I also have a ton of patches as well. Good luck.

Hey Paul,
Thanks for the comment on the EVH patch on my Noisytoyz site. First public feedback I got.Good to here.
I need to update a bit and maybe use instructions for the Midiwizzard (If permitted my Graham) and get rid of the old ways of uploading.

Hey Jim,
This is the MIDI to USB interface.
http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDOUNO

Here is the normal cameport connector.

Use the help document in the MidiWizzaed program. It is easyer than a Ace solo. :-)

Thank You for putting the time and effort into making these patches
and publishing for anyone to download. I must admit I get lazy trying
to make my own programs and algorithms, plus just the fact that the
2101, in my humble opinion has to many effects/parameters/mixers in
it, unless you are a studio musician/sound tech, it gets
overwhelming. So to have these patches available is to use as a
baseline or starting point is great!!

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: Tips on upgrading/using my 2101

I totally agree it is great that others took the time out to help those more technically challenged!

Hey Jim,
This is the MIDI to USB interface.
http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDOUNO

Here is the normal cameport connector.
http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat%5Fid=2002&sku=27033&cm_mmc_o=-p8ByplCjCiICHrV1RqHCjCFbpb%20XBYlfbgL%20gz_kwCjCFbpb%20XBYlfbgL%20gz_kw&gclid=CITCzYeJiYsCFR0CPwodnTuzJw

Use the help document in the MidiWizzaed program. It is easyer than a Ace solo. :-)
