Clipping

Clipping

2010-02-10 by taj7652

Am I the only one who has clipping on stock channels. Especially on program change, and time related effects. I have reduced the levels to nearly nada and still clip, clip clip.

Re: Clipping

2010-02-10 by plw1015

I personally never pay attention to the level or if it is clipping, if it sounds good, who cares? I think the owner's manual even mentions something to that effect about clipping.

Are you clipping on the 2101 unit or your mixer/amp?
I had the same issue when recording...I was using my mixer with the XLR outs on the back of the 2101 and running with the button on the back in the on + position. What worked for me was I switched the speaker compensator switch to the out position and I went through all my effects and set all the gain and volume levels the same, now no problems. These units seem to clip real easy but I think it's due to all the effects being at different gains and volume levels.

The 2101 is clipping.
However, I just (late night) received some high quality patch cables and it seemed to help. I will have to gig with it or at least heat it up good to see if it's fixed, but the funny thing is I never had this problem before. So I was starting to think that the unit was reaching the end of it's useful life; that capacitors were going bad or something. I sure hope that it's not. I hate to see this thing go, but it was an audible clip. Very dangerous to the speakers, and expensive.

did your 2101 have the XLR fix?? on older models, there was a problem with the XLR outs using the cabinet emulators.. i think the fix was replacing a few caps on the board.. it's possible that it's one of the ones that did not have the fix..

also.. does your 2101 have the PPC upgrade?? it could also be that there is a processor mismatch, and you're getting the "cannon" effect from the mismatch of the SDISC processors..

RE: [gsp-2101] Re: Clipping

2010-02-16 by Todd Johnson

I'm not using the XLRs. I am just using the 1/4in. loop. That's good to know, though.
I do have the upgrade. I'd love to know more about this cannon-effect.
Funny thing: I swapped the better patch cables in place and it appeared to fix the clipping. I played through it a number of times to test drive and all seemed OK. Then I went through the music set with the bass player and half-way through it began clipping.
It always seems to initiate with pedal program change. I wonder if the quality of DIN chord would cause this.
I also suspect a warmed-up GSP; since it seems to be more susceptible into the set than at the beginning.
I really thought the monster patch chords were a fix and was going to say so here, but now I'm glad I didn't.

The 1/4 inch outputs will sound distorted if they go straight to a mixer/full range speakers (in my experience). They sound better running to a guitar amp/preamp/speakers. Not sure what your setup is.

I run it through the effects loop of the amp; a Mesa mkIII. This puts the GSP in control of everything except the Master, Tone Pull Boost and the EQ.
Tonight I am going to try and run the MkIII master up and that will require me to run the GSP at around 8 O'clock. I currently run it the other way (as mesa recomends). I may also turn the Global Master of the GST down to get more signal running to and from the unit.

Can you provide more detail of the connections? Might help people figure out whats causing the issue. Unless you previously posted and I missed it.

The loop output of the mkIII is going to the loop input(s) on the 2101 and the 2101 loop outs are going to mkIII loop in(s)? Are any Y cables involved?

I'm pretty sure the mesa has a billion configurations as well...

I really thought the monster patch chords were a fix and was going to say so here, but now I'm glad I didn't.

also.. does your 2101 have the PPC upgrade?? it could also be that there is a processor mismatch, and you're getting the "cannon" effect from the mismatch of the SDISC processors..
