My GSP 2101 is sick again!!!

My GSP 2101 is sick again!!!

2010-09-12 by Marko Menart

Aaaarrgh!!!! Does anyone know what could be causing my problems... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJn6dvdv6ys.

When I change the program there is occasionally a loud bang but not always. Sometimes GSP recognizes the PPC 210, sometimes don't?!
Sometimes a sound gets through and sometimes don't. The battery is brand new, inside nothing corroded.

Analogue part of GSP seems to be OK...

However I can't do gigs with it anymore! Before I carry it to the service (again !!!) I would like some advice from you.

Best regards, Marko

Could be a bad capacitor. Take a close look at the caps, make sure none of them
are swelling.

That 'Cannon Fire 'sound is notorious with some of the original PPC-210 Cards. On the programs that are giving you a problem, check the 'ATTN' on your Noise Gate...you get a load of white noise if it's set too low. Also, try a Factory reset and see if that makes the problem go away.
If not, the you may have a few things wrong and best to bring it to a qualified repairman.

Actually, the easiest way to fix this is to swap the main DSP chips on the PPC-210 board onto the main board. The key to this is having the the older chip (marked VLSI) on the PPC-210 board and the newer DSP chip (marked with the Harman International logo) on the main board.

AFAIR, there is a problem with having an SDISC and an SDISC-II in the PPC.. if your 2101's processor is an SDISC and you have an SDISC-II on the PPC, you will get the cannon noise.. and there's an issue with the board being a 10Mhz and the PPC having an SDISC-II on it.. you have to clock the motherboard to 20Mhz.. Dieter has/had a step-by-step on how to do it..

Re: My GSP 2101 is sick again!!!

2010-09-14 by Marko Menart

Thanks guys, for replies! My GSP is updated to latest version and PPC was made by Dieter, so no cannon effect (never happened in the past).

I think I found what causes problems.

Today I noticed 2 things:

When I powered up the GSP there was only 240 programs available (PPC was not recognized) and then after switching off and on again I have all 255 programs available again. This happened several times-always same result.

Secondly, it seems that when PPC is recognized GSP can't play two programs one after another. For example 1=OK, 2=not working, 3=OK, 4=not working... and also 1=OK, 1=not working, 1=OK... all programs that are using both S-Discs=not working. When "not working" you can hear bangs, squeals and whatnot as on the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJn6dvdv6ys) at 0:40.

BUT, when PPC is not recognized everything works as it should.

After several hard resets and power-ons and offs everything stays the same. It looks it is a PPC problem.

Best regards, Marko

My GSP 2101 is sick again!!!

OK, I guess by now I can safely say my GSP is cured since it works flawlessly for about three weeks!

I took it to the servicer and he found a possible cold joint on the back side where the cooling ribs are mounted. As he said this is where the processors got their power. And because of this cold joint the power was inconsistent and PPC went crazy. Besides that he pushed a few chips to check if they seat in their bases. A few of them were a little loosen.

So, now everything works fine and I'm happy again.

A BIG thanks to Dieter to point to me all possible defects!!!

Best regards, Marko
