How do you calibrate preamp tubes for the 2101?

RE: [gsp-2101] calibrate

2011-06-20 by M M

It's confusing but it seems like many people are buying whatever tubes and putting them in and it works fine? I see that its possible that your 2101 might sound different from another 2101 by doing it this way (not necessarily bad?). If it means that slight gain adjustments might have to be made between units I might be able to live with that. I only really use my 2nd unit as a backup.

Does digitech still sell tubes for these?

Re: [gsp-2101] calibrate

I've successfully tried all kinds of 12AX7 tubes in both my regular 2101 and my 2101 Pro without any ill side effects. Yes, your 2101 might sound different than another 2101 with the same or different tubes, but who cares? As long as it sounds good to you.
For the purists, even the same 12AX7 tubes from the same manufacturer can have different characteristics because of manufacturing variances and can therefore sound different.
In short, listen with your ears. There's nothing going to "blow up" in your 2101 just because you're using a 12AX7 that has different characteristics than the ones that came "stock" with your new unit. Go for it. Buy a few 12AX7 tubes from different manufacturers and start swapping away.

Regarding a source for 12AX7 tubes, I repeat my previous recommendation, Doug's Tubes:
Doug has sold me a bunch of tubes for my Randall RP2/50 and RM4 setup and he's always been dependable, honest, and ships promptly.

Of course th unit still works fine.

After replacing the tubes AND calibrating I doubt that you can hear a sound
difference. You only can measuere it.
If you do not calibtate it, of course you hear it, since the gain changes
significant.

NO slight gain adjustment but an immense gain adjustment.

No.

I concour with Graham, Doug's Tubes is an exellent and reliable source or tubes.

Doug actually made up a 'sampler set' for me so I could try different brands in my 2101 and select the tubes that worked best for my ears.

Go with your ears dude, they don't lie (at least to you!!! LOL!)

So would you think that replacement tubes would cure the squealing noise? It seems like applying gain to the 2nd tube causes it more. I suppose the original tubes need to be replaced regardless after ~15 yrs.

Re: [gsp-2101] calibrate

Different tubes are constructed differently and some are "tighter" (so-to-speak) giving a bit more of a controlled & smooth response. Again I would recommend trial & error. A "quieter" tube, especially the 2nd tube in the pair, might do the trick.

Also, try tweaking the 2101's distortion volume & power amp's volume settings to maybe get a more controlled response.

I've even had a loose ground or ultra gainy pickup in my guitar that gave me feedback & squealy noise.

Just some of my experiences with my 2101 I've had for almost two decades. Hope some of this helps....

It's cheap enough to try.

But I suddenly remembered that there was a squeal a previous ROM version used to make in certain situations. Upgrading to the next version fixed it. This was probably 15 years ago, so search the archives for this group.

I have 2.06.06

I don't think it's software because it didn't do it before and now all of a sudden..
