Delays

I'm starting to get used to the delays now. some are pretty cool and all, but there are some things I am having trouble setting up.
So, I want to create an imitation of Tom Shultz Hyper Space. Traditionally it would involve a heavy regeneration of phase and or flanger as well as a mono delay. You would link the expression pedal to the delay's time as well as the regeneration of the flanger/phaser. (so that as you move the pedal, both the time and regeneration change.)
Now on a stomp box when you change the time back and forth you get really cool sounds. But I am not getting the Effect Level on the GSP as I do with the stomp box. Do I need to insert a mixer before the modulation and delay effects?
I was trying a bunch of stuff- mono and stereo effects as well as overall wet dry on the expression pedal, and just can't seem to get the delay timing level that I am looking for..
I am having a blast playing with this thing. There are a ton of sounds and all, but getting them tweaked in just right is a challenge...
