Harmony?

Harmony?

2004-12-03 by mylernascar

Has anyone been able to program a decent harmonized patch? You
know skynyrd or allman brothers type sounds in a 1 guitar band ;)

Is it possible or do I need to look for one of the DHP products the
33 (3 part) or the 55 (5 part) or look into an even higher priced
eventide?

Thanks

I haven't but when it comes to a harmonizer, stick to the minimum amount of harmonies. The 3 part is just fine but usually two is what tends to sound best. How many times have you heard three part harmonies form a guitar player? Sure, there way Queen who multitracked. There were bands like Molly Hatchet but they had three guitarists and a fourth guy on bass. They didn't need harmonizers. If you want the best harmony guitars in the world, by the way, buy the first and second albums by the band Boston. It wasn't harmonizers but oh how sweet. The second album, called Don't Look Back, is the best example. Good luck.

Yeah I agree a 2 part would be ideal ...

I agree that the Hatchet and Boston stuff are other good examples of
harmonized playing. I'm sure there're are tons of examples ;) of
what would be nice to achieve from a one guitar band ...

I have no idea about the DHP series – I've read they do a good job
though can sound processed, which might be acceptable. I wonder
if they allow you to create two parts or if the 33 requires all 3 to
be used for example?

Thanks for your comments.

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: Harmony?

2004-12-03 by Adrian Teo

The DHP-55 and it's close cousin the Studio 5000 (i.e. an upgraded
DHP-55) are one of the best harmonizers I've used. They are very
responsive and track very accurately, and give results pretty close to
an Eventide.

Depending on what you are playing, adding the 5th, 7th and octave notes
based on a major scale usually give a pretty good harmony. I usually
set it up to give -12, -5, +5 +7 (the DHP-55 creates 4 notes plus the
original note) or -12, +5 +7 +12. Tweak around with the volume balance
between each harmonized note to get the sound you want.

Incidentally Steve Vai still has a DHP-55 in his gig rack. :)

Have fun experimenting.

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: Harmony?

2004-12-03 by Jorge

I don't see why it would force you to do 3. You should be able to do 2 harmonies just fine. However, I have a hard time apprceciating a band with only one guitarist, bassist and drummer. For me, there has to be either another guitarist or a keyboard player. To me, at least, there's nothing worse than hearing nice full chords and then everytime you have to play some single notes, or harmonies with a harmonizer, there's that emptiness left. A drummer and bass cannot fill the hole of what was just there and now isn't.

That's strange, I went down to the crossroads but the only person I met was Eric Clapton, whoever he is.

Hahahahahahaha! Who cares what a particular guitarist plays like. It's the whole composition that I like. Listen to both the guitars and keyboards by the band Kansas on songs like Miracles Out Of Nowhere, Song For America, Relentless, Icarus, etc. After that, who cares how crafty the guitar playing is. It's the song my dear lads and not the flash.

Hahahahahahaha! Who cares what a particular guitarist plays like. It's
the whole composition that I like. Listen to both the guitars and
keyboards by the band Kansas on songs like Miracles Out Of Nowhere, Song
For America, Relentless, Icarus, etc. After that, who cares how crafty
the guitar playing is. It's the song my dear lads and not the flash.

Google Steve Vai for all the info you need to know

3. Made multiple heavy guitar instrumental solo CD's in the '80s-
continuing on to today

Oh my!!! Who is Steve Vai? Wow! :)

Yes, he definitely one of my favorite guitar players. Plays the same stuff
Satriani does basically. In fact, I believe Vai was a student of Satriani,
or vice versa. Vai also played on one of the best albums (IMHO) ever, David
Lee Roth's Eat 'Em and Smile. Super guitar playing on that album.

I haven't listened to a lot of his newer stuff. I think he's really into
the 7 string guitars now, or at least was a few years ago. He's the
designer of the JEM series at Ibanez. Man, those things with the handles
and flower or pyramid inlay. I always wanted some of those.

Check out his web site. I'm sure he has some sound clips there. And BTW,
again in IMHO, that G3 concert has 3 of the best guitar players on the
planet. I personally Mamlsteen is just incredible.

Steve's big solo is on a triple neck guitar - one 6
string, one 12 string, and one 6 string fretless.
Need I say more? The guy is not only an outstanding
technical master, but uses processing effects very
dramatically.

G3 Cd's and DVDs I highly recommend.

Why go see a guy they call god when you can accept Jesus as Lord and saviour and see the REAL God? Anyway, those guitarists really are incredible instrumentalists but I don't find them to be as good musicians as they are instrumentalists. They can do more with their instrument than most of us can do with a hammer and nail. I just wish their songs sounded more like enjoyable songs. They do have some songs that combine the two but it's not often enough. Well, at least not for me. I respect you guy's opinions on them, though.

I also won a meet and greet pass from Steve's Website,
by sucking up a bit. I stated in my message: why go
trick or treating when you can go see god! :-)

It was a good night!

By the way, I must disagree: Steve is NOT kid stuff.

I have to agree as well with the "song" part.
Roth's first solo album was a perfect balance of killer guitar & cool tunes.
They lost it after that record. I never took to Steves solo stuff either.
Don't get me wrong, he's an incredible player but I prefer listening
to good songs that may or may not have fantastic instrumentalists within them.
Cheers
