hardware editor for K5

2019-09-10 by Martin Pavlas

Hi there,

this is my first post and I hope it will not be seen as a promo of my work. It is not my intention.

I have recently bought K5M. It was always a synth I wanted because it is unique in many respects. In the same time I am working on the project of a hardware synth programmer / midi controller that is aimed towards visualization of sound parameters and bi-directional communication with synth - ie. it not only sends data to the synth but it also reads the parameter settings whenever it changes (prog change, actions on panel, MIDI, etc).

I was wondering if getting support for K5 is something that you see as interesting and if so, if you had some suggestions on what is important to implement.

More info about the controller can be found at www.electra.one <http://www.electra.one/> and there are a few videos on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ktDO1Bw17s <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ktDO1Bw17s> (with analog synth) and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rkRg2NA8O8 <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rkRg2NA8O8> (with DX7)

Thanks!

Martin

Looks like a great device! I feel it could be ten times better (maybe?? :-) if the software employed graphical elements where suitable (spectra, envelopes, etc.; those sliders don’t really qualify), and with the use of a touch screen in addition to physical controls.

I haven’t been using my K5s enough to comment there, but they certainly cry out for some intelligent automation.

yeah I really think that K5 deserves graphical envelopes controlled with touch. At this moment electra supports sliders and lists, but it is a starting point. Work will be done on it.

I think it is a great idea! I think you have hit all of the high point, and while a graphical UI with multi-touch would certainly be cool, for me it is all about the physical interface (PUI??)

To answer your question, I think support for the K5 would be welcome, at least by me. I'd also love to see support for the Roland MKS-80, and (dare I say it) the Kurzweil 1000 family of expander.

Of course no response would be complete without a feature request/question... it appears that this can control VST plugins as well?

I will be saving pennies to become an early adopter, I think it is brilliant!

one more question - the price includes VAT, is there an option for folks who do not live in a country that collects VAT?

I’ve actually considered doing that too but changed my mind and currently am working on a new synthesizer project which will include additive synthesis.

I designed several test boards including encoders and A/D boards.

You can see my test boards here:

Eventually I’ll update that as the photos are very large.

Hi Bill,

I am very sorry for a belated response - your message escaped my attention. If you are outside the VAT areas or you are a VAT registered business, people contact me directly and I would prepare a special invoice for you.

Regards,

Maertin
