1.Have Midi In of K5 connected to midi out of the interface.
2.Have Midi Out of K5 connected to midi in of the interface.
3*.Set the protect switch to off(rear of K5, front of K5m).
4.Press MIDI button, set RCV channel OMNI on, set EXCLUSIVE TRS & RCV on too(They turn off with the K5).
5.Send data.
6.Enjoy!

*Don't forget to turn it on when you send patches to it and to turn it off to send something else then patches. <- Your GUI 'll turn crazy if you don't(If PGM in midi menu is set to multi, you will not be able to use singles, next, your K5 will crash if you press multi int)

Re: receiving sysex data ?

2004-07-04 by phonophobie

hmm..somehow i have a problem with saving my patches also, i guess :/

storing internal patches / sysex dump:

1. in midiOx i enter "manual dump"
2. on k5 i enable exclusive messages/omni on
3. then i set PGM=single
4. dump = block
5. internal memory

after execute, the k5 crashes and the display stays at "busy" - i have
to turn it off.
Midiox receives 993bytes and is waiting for completion.

SO i guess i have not completly stored all my patches.
I don´t want to try, sending soundbanks (blocks) to my k5m now. Since
i don´t know if the backup of my patches was succesfully. It would be
stupid to loose all my work.

ANY IDEA ?

thanx
phono

Re: receiving sysex data ?

2004-07-04 by phonophobie

just an update...

i had no success sending or receiving sysex data from k5m!
so far i tried to store my patches. and i tried to load sysex banks
into it. the result is that i lost half of my patches, now. they are
named like this "******" - and they contain no data and strange
values, but no sound. all i did was trying to transfer sysex data via
midiox and soundquest. midiox is just the best tool for sysex dumps in
my opinion - and it works without any problems with my other synth.
so i guess it has to be something with my k5. i am quite sure i
enabled all system exclusive things and set the right midi settings.
I am really getting frustrated. Does anyone have any idea? I am on
OS1.0 - is there any bug?

thanks

If you can't send all the patches, that's due to transfer going too fast. You should get up wait time / delay options if there are in MIDIox(There are in SoundDiver).

For the other problems(Maybe patch send too), you/someone else should try to unsolder the battery and resolder/change it.

I already got the problems you got(name is ********, no sound), but only on 2 "Roland D-110"s.

Re: receiving sysex data ?

2004-07-04 by phonophobie

Thanx. Setting a delay time higher then the standart settings in
midiox, did it! I now can receive sysex banks into my k5.

But still can´t send k5 internal patches/banks to my pc.

I wonder why this could be something about a battery. hmmm.. i will
try to contact kawai maybe, too about this. I could ask for
replacements for the knobs also... maybe they have still something in
stock. I had good experience with kawai support sofar.

If someone knows something more about my problems - please comment. thanx!

Btw:
i also installed that atari emu and will try those old programms :)

Re: receiving sysex data ?

2004-07-05 by phonophobie

Hi klaus,

i decided to continue to talk about the problems here, since others
may have the same problems. so this could be a good info for everyone....

to answer your questions:

1. i have rom version 1.0
2. trs/rcv is on
3. yes i can play with any midinote
4. in midiox programmchange messages are displayed. for example when i
change from singlepatch 1 to 2 a sysexmessage shows up in midiox. but
there is a odd thing about the patchnames displayed in midiox: the
name of patch 1 on k5 is "onlybass" but the name of the same patch in
midiox is called "acc. grand piano" - so every k5patch has a different
name in midiox sysex display.
5. i can´t send any sysex data to my pc. the datatransfer stops always
at 993 bytes, and my k5m crashes

It´s very strange..
the only succes i have made is to transfer sysex banks to my k5m. BUT
this only worked one time or two times. When i wanted to do send
another bank then, the K5m doesn´t received any single sounds. the
internal patches were the same as before... I had to reboot my PC(?!)

Note: in Midiox you have to enter a higher "delayvalue" for the
transfer rate!

I will check if there is any delayrate for RECEIVING sysexdata, in
MidiOX setups.. since it crashes always at 993 bytes.

thanx
phono

Phono,
The guys at this site helping you are great and have given you all the advice I know about. Also the K5 technical support from Kawai America is great. I left and e-mail and phone call and got a response on the same day. The technical support guy actually called me!! Check their web site to get the phone number.
I also own a K5000s and K5. I work so much that I get little time to do programming, so I have just loaded my favorite patches on the K5 internal and card. I really love both units. ;
Good luck

Hi phono,

I have no experiences with that version, so may be someone else who
has, may have some suggestions for you.

The only hint i can give is to do an upgrade to the latest revision.

cheers

Re: receiving sysex data ?

ok. i am very thankful for your help! I hope i will find a solution
for the sysex problems. i will have a call with kawai technican later
this week - they have indeed a great support in general.

the biggest problem is, that i don´t know exactly what the problem is ;)

well, as for sending banks to the k5 - it seems to work only a few
times. Then i have to turn off the unit for a while - after that it
works again for a few banks / not for all. It´s maybe something with
battery, as someone said before. who knows.. i tried those sysex banks
that i found here in the files area - i guess they are posted by joel

However - i really like the sound of the k5!! it´s indeed a good
addition to my k5000. And it will stay in my little studio for a while.

thank you
phono :)

Use something besides MidiOx to do you sysex xfer - like Cakewalk, or
another editor Librarian. The K5 requires an acknowledgement for every sysex
packet, and most sysex software that is not specifically tuned for the K5
will not do this.

The Atari editors we have in the files section will do this, and also if you
have SoundDiver, you can do it (sounddiver is a Librarian only).

MidiQuest has a K5 editor / librarian, as well but it sucks for editing.

5. i cant send any sysex data to my pc. the datatransfer stops always
at 993 bytes, and my k5m crashes

Its very strange..
the only succes i have made is to transfer sysex banks to my k5m. BUT
this only worked one time or two times. When i wanted to do send
another bank then, the K5m doesnt received any single sounds. the
internal patches were the same as before... I had to reboot my PC(?!)

Note: in Midiox you have to enter a higher "delayvalue" for the
transfer rate!

I will check if there is any delayrate for RECEIVING sysexdata, in
MidiOX setups.. since it crashes always at 993 bytes.

thanx
phono

===============================

For K5->PC transfer,
If the K5 crashes, it might be a problem that requires to remove and
replace the battery(Resets RAM, that might have bugs in it caused by
Protect being off while the tune playing was sending other SysEx than
presets).

Maybe MIDIox is the problem, you should try to use K5 compatible
programs(Overtone, SoundDiver(This one directly supports a really long
list of synths with a different interface to use all synth's features
for each of them), . . .).

Updating to the latest revision will not help the K5 not to crash IMO
since the RAM is soldered on the K5's mainboard and is not removable
like the BIOS chip(Already tried to remove and reinsert every removable
chips but no success).

Don't even try to find receiving delay, since the delay has to be set on
the transmitting device and the K5 is slower then about any MIDI
interface(Well, slower than my MusicQuest MQX-32M, a 1988-9 MIDI interface).

Re: [k5synth] Re: receiving sysex data ?

2004-07-06 by Antoine Deschênes

so may be someone else who
has, may have some suggestions for you.

Me, and I'm the first one to have sent suggestions to him(About all of
the ones he received).
He told he had problems with the names :
The names MIDIox writes are the General MIDI ones, and I don't think
MIDIox retreives the K5's sound name every time you change it.

Here is what I sent him:
3rd one:
For K5->PC transfer,
If the K5 crashes, it might be a problem that requires to remove and
replace the battery(Resets RAM, that might have bugs in it caused by
Protect being off while the tune playing was sending other SysEx than

2nd one:

If you can't send all the patches, that's due to transfer going too fast. You should get up wait time / delay options if there are in MIDIox(There are in SoundDiver).

For the other problems(Maybe patch send too), you/someone else should try to unsolder the battery and resolder/change it.

I already got the problems you got(name is ********, no sound), but only on 2 "Roland D-110"s.

1st one:

To Klaus:

P.S. No, I've not received any other thing then "Good 4 chan opamps are
hard to find" and "I'm not familiar with these circuits" from the guy I
found who could help us removing the K5's noise.

sysex and other things

2004-07-06 by phonophobie

SYSEX:
======
thanx for the summary..
i guess i have following options:
- replace the battery
- using a another (maybe "oldshool") sysex dump program
- change the midi interface
- try other (libarian) software

Well a friend of mine has this soundquest editor/libarian. but this
was not working either. however i didn´t really knew how to you it.

I don´t own Sounddiver or Cakewalk. But i had succes with these Atari
based Editors (By the way they are great). They run just perfectly for
editing the K5m :) And i had NO problem sending sounds to the k5m. But
these sounds were in special, editorbased formats. However i had still
problems with sending my internal patches again (K5->PC/Atari)

Is there a Ataribased Utily or K5 editor that might help sending sysex?

drT Format
==========
this is the format within those atari editor. i stored my patches in
*.k5v format. Just install STEEM when you are on PC and run the prg.
There should be no problem - i hope ;)

Dead or ALive?
==============
here is another strange thing that happened last night by programming
patches. Suddenly there was a green Light coming out of the corner.
"JUK! it´s alive again!" .. yes the backlight suddenly was working
again.... now the bad part: Tomorrow morning it turned dark again...
and it´s still ....

cya
phono :)

Re: receiving sysex data ?

2004-07-06 by kjtkfuenf

Hi Antoine

i am sorry to hear that.

There are some quad opamps, but the problem is that they must fit
exactly and the risk to burst the K5 by trying out the wrong thing
prevents me from doing experiments with unknown consequences.

Greetings Klaus

Re: [k5synth] Re: receiving sysex data ?

2004-07-07 by Antoine Deschênes

they must fit exactly

The biggest problem is the pinout(If I remember corretly, about any
opamp can replace a TL0xx). I saw a couple of 14pin opamps but some were
2 chans, some not the same . . .
If no other opamps can fit, filtering the 6v input(Noise is heard only
when the K5 booted up and the PSU's 6v is always on when you turn on the
switch) of each opamps might fix the problem.(But the traces bring the
current directly to the chips, without any components between, which
makes it difficult to filter.)

Read following excerpt from an original message of Curt Malouin

If you're LCD backlight is not working, the first thing you
should try is heating up the joints and applying a bit more
solder (a lot of the inverters suffer from cold solder joints,
I guess).

I did that and my inverter restarted to work, but not the backlight.
About a month ago(Was now using 2 2x40 LCD backlights), the inverter
died this time.
Also, I had a really loud hum coming out of the headphones plug before I
added solder to every solder joints of the PSU board. (Some had cracks).
