Seeking K5 part

Seeking K5 part

2005-01-23 by Robert Hill

Greetings,

I have an ailing K5, and I'm hoping that someone has a spare circuit
board from a scrapped K5 that they are willing to sell.

There is a certain circuit board inside the K5 that holds the backup
battery. This is the battery that retains all of the K5's patch
info. A few years ago, I tried to replace this battery. During the
attempt, the prongs that clip to and hold the battery in place broke
off. Subsequent attempts to re-solder a replacement battery have
proven unsuccessful.

Is there anyone out there who has a partial or broken K5 that
they're willing to cannibalize so that I can get my K5 working
again? My K5 is in perfect condition otherwise, except that I need
to reload all of its original data.

Hopeful in NYC, USA,

Robert H.

Are you trying to talk about the plates sticked to the
battery, that comes off WITH the battery(It's making
part of it, you didn't scraped the board, just
destroyed the old battery)?

Now, if it's what I think, use your soldering iron and
remove the remaining pins in the holes(Remove the
board first) and insert the wires getting out of the
new battery in the holes(Any between both on the side
that there are two), new same type battery is not a
custom made one like the old one.

Anyways, there is a really low number of K5 produced,
so someone will even take the pain to hard wire a
board if it breaks.

If the motherboard is good, just another battery to wire in that is 3V, Velcro it in if you have to, make sure nothing can short and make it work. See this web site (about a quarter of the way down) for more battery info. Even a small leaded 3V lithium battery should work if you can not find the exact replacement.
Here is the battery spec:
jameco.com has some battery holders.
Good luck. Be sure you back up any data before you remove the battery (if you haven't already). All my information is based on data I have read and not an actual viewing of the battery and board. Correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I tried doing just what you
recommended previously, but it didn't work. The synth still works,
but it won't save any data when turned off. I'll make another
attempt.

Thanks for the resource links, also.

Is the battery at least connected? Have you sent data
before telling this(If you don't change the default
sounds before turning off, it's sure you'll see the
same thing after re-powering it)

No, the battery is not connected and has not been for
a long time. All patch info has been reset to the
default values, either K5SINGLE or K5*MULTI for all
patches, all banks.

After I restore the ability to hold memory, then I'll
go about importing the default patches and go from
there. Thanks again for your help. I am confident that
I'll get this wonderful machine running again.

If you can't do it, go to a local repair shop(Not a
commercial one) and bring the board and the battery,
it will take five minutes to do.
