KI sound problems

KI sound problems

2013-09-08 by tomcc59

I have just purchased a K1 ii and when switched on it looks all good until you
play a sound. The sound is either a mixture of sounds that sustain or crackle
and are a mixture of different sounds that either go up or down in pitch or are
like a LFO has gone crazy but don't respond to the keys pressed. I can change
banks the noise stops but the same behaviour but maybe different sounds. Its as
if the synth has a mind of its own. I don't know wether it may be the CPU or
wave Rom or something else. The battery has just been replaced and everything on the
board looks good. I have tried to reload the patches and the synth only took half the download and MidiOx has said memory buffer full.
Could this be a RAM issue which also affects
 the quality of the sounds??
Any suggestions or just throw it away?? The synth is in really
good condition

Hi there,

I don't know if this helps but I had the same problem with my K1r while using it with a DC-8 Ram card. I eventually tracked the problem down to a dying battery in the Ram Card. I changed it and it's been fine ever since. If you don't have a ram card maybe the internal battery me be losing it's charge.. Chris.

Maybe the best time for the factory reset:

Power Off
Press SYSTEM, hold it and Power On

It will erase internal RAM, so backup your data before doing it.

Good luck!

Thanks for that info. I just tried and it still kept all the patches names intact but unfortunately made no difference to the distorted types of sounds being produced. The patch names give an idea of the type of sound which should play and it does make some of those types of sound but it is all over the place pitch is up down loud soft sustained modulated by LFO random. And is the same results for each patch but changes the sounds to something similar to the patch name but totally unusable.
Thanks for the advice. Tom

Could the mod and pitch bend wheels be misbehaving? What happens if you set Local Off and play it over MIDI? If you examine the MIDI output what does it have to say for itself?

Are you using the correct power supply? What is it rated for?

Thanks for reply. The power supply is the original 12v 500mA. The pitch and mod wheels work as they should as they affect the sound as you would expect. I can out put Midi to another keyboard and it works fine with all keys playing (sending data and velocity and aftertouch working as they should) I will try the Local off and use another keyboard and let you know.

Hiya,I have the original K1 and a K1m,when my K1m went screwy I just
changed the battery, regarding the K1 ,the original patches are in rom
so you won't lose those,I can't say I know much about the K1 II but it
must be similar,my K1 was damaged in the post the right end was
smashed to pieces and wasn't working at all so I took it all to bits
and unplugged and reseated all the plugs and voila it worked they seem
to be pretty bullet proof apart from the keyboard/case which I had to
glue back together, the top 4 keys still don't work properly but it
works.
Have you tried a more powerful PSU? A regulated 1amp PSU will cost you
peanuts on ebay or similar for the K1II it will just draw what it needs.
