But does your EX-800 transmit MIDI? It would seem incredibly weird to me if the PC900 replaced would have changed the transmit side.

Check that you re sending MIDI on the correct channel - sometimes the simple things catch us out. You can set the MIDI channel on the EX-800 with parameter 86,
