Hi Mark, I use the JoeMeek VC3, the VC6's baby brother with pretty much the same technology and sound, and it sounds lovely. It does colour the sound, but in a subtle and flattering way. One particular beauty of it is the opto-compressor. I always use it on vocals, recorded through a Neumann U87, for pre-converter compression, and even a substantial dose of 'squeeze' doesn't sound unnatural. Also great on acoustic guitar. On the whole, the Joe Meek sounds a bit retro, but not exaggerated. We're all used to the sound of warm esoteric gear on our favourite albums, and the JoeMeek adds a little bit of that. You also get lots of gain (and headroom) to drive your converters. Both the VC6 and the VC3 are definitely better than their retail prices suggest. Definitely a good buy! However, if you are willing to spend more, go for the company's top channel strip, the VC1. It is, admittedly, in a different league. But the difference isn't all that great. Cheers, Recky
