JoeMeek VC6Q

JoeMeek VC6Q

2001-10-02 by Mark at Enduser

Hi all,

has anybody used the JoeMeek VC6Q? I have read some good reports about it
and I have a good price, but before I buy I thought I'd ask here.

I will be using it mainly for vox, acoustic guitar, electric and bass (in
that order of usage..) I know of its sound and I already own a Behringer
Composer Pro so if I need clean sounds I can use that. Is the VC6Q as is
sugessted in many reviews, suitable for vocals and acoustic guitar?? I do
want some colouration of the sound but I guess the core question is if this
colouration is controllable enough to be useful???

cheers in advance

I have a Joe Meek VC3 and if I recall correctly from reading their
website the preamp in that is the same as the one in the VC6Q. I use
it for vocals and pretty much everything else but it is definitely
*not* a high end piece of gear. You can get a reasonable sound out
of it but finding that narrow little range where it is at its best is
kind of a touchy business. This was particularly brought home to me
when I borrowed a Mindprint channel strip in the middle of this
session to check it out, the Mindprint was so much more forgiving it
was ridiculous.

So in short the Joe Meek is usable but it can be harsh. The enhancer
is usually just about too harsh for anything IMHO.

BTW I just ordered a Joe Meek VC2 after using one at a friends
studio which is the top of their line as far as the channel strip
type thingys go. There is just no getting around the fact the
expensive ones sound much better over a much broader range of
applications than the cheap ones.

If I were you I would fork over the extra dollars and go for the VC1Q
which is their mid range box. The first stage of that is the same as
the one in the VC2 and the VC2 is a stunning sounding box. The
difference between the VC1 and the VC2 is the VC2 has a tube output
stage.

Hi Mark,
Have you also considered and listened to the RNC compressor? More at
http://www.fmraudio.com/overview.html. I've compared it to and like it
more than that Behringer you mention above. Just a suggestion at
another very good compressor for it's value.

Thanks for the comments Dennis - I'm in a quandry about what to do now! ; )
you have me looking about for a price on the mindprint Envoice now!

I was looking into getting an ART Pro Channel (mmm... variable mu
compression <slobber>) but that is way too expensive right now : (

yep, I was very interested in that too, but I do want something with
character - the Behringer is pretty dull but its grand as a light duty
compressor and peak limiter. I'll get the RNC at a later stage! maybe two!

thanks for the help

Hi Mark,

I use the JoeMeek VC3, the VC6's baby brother with pretty much the same
technology and sound, and it sounds lovely. It does colour the sound,
but in a subtle and flattering way. One particular beauty of it is the
opto-compressor. I always use it on vocals, recorded through a Neumann
U87, for pre-converter compression, and even a substantial dose of
'squeeze' doesn't sound unnatural. Also great on acoustic guitar.
On the whole, the Joe Meek sounds a bit retro, but not exaggerated.
We're all used to the sound of warm esoteric gear on our favourite
albums, and the JoeMeek adds a little bit of that. You also get lots of
gain (and headroom) to drive your converters. Both the VC6 and the VC3
are definitely better than their retail prices suggest. Definitely a
good buy! However, if you are willing to spend more, go for the
company's top channel strip, the VC1. It is, admittedly, in a different
league. But the difference isn't all that great.

Cheers,

Recky

The mindprint was very nice but you indicated later that you were
looking for a colored compression and that is *not* the feeling I got
from the mind print's comp. It worked beautifully but it was very
*uncolored* in my subjective opinion.

>yep, I was very interested in that too, but I do want something with

I have an acquaintance who is a producer with a pretty amazing list
of credits and who can definitely afford just about any preamp who
raves about the Joe Meek VC1 series. They are only slightly more
expensive than the VC6Qs. If I were you I would probably be checking
those out. On the other hand I do not have first hand experience
with the VC1 series and I am not that blown away by my VC3. Like I
said though my friends VC2 sounded very nice to my ears. Nicer in
fact than his Avalon 737 and his Focusright Producers Pack.

This is wrong actually, the VC2 is the top of their channel strip
line and it is about twice the price of the VC1.
