You're buying a multiface, which has analog I/O, so why would you buy an
extra convertor for your SPDIF??? I don't understand the reasoning
behind that.
Your multiface will most likely work like this: you can use the coaxial
connection for SPDIF and AES/EBU. You can also use the optical
connection for the SPDIF signal. This is how my Digiface works and how
the original Hammerfall also worked. RME is very flexible.

Hammerfall DSP systems

2001-09-14 by Murray McDowall

Are any users of the new generation of Hammerfall cards able to report on
Latency performance when GSIF drivers and ASIO drivers are used
simultaneously. I recall reports shortly after the GS driver was introduced
that Latencies had to be backed off to 42 msec to get both drivers to work
simultaneously. Has performance improved in this area.

Also has anyone been able to audition the multiface unit -- how does it
sound compared to other ADC/ DAC units?

Regards,
Murray

Yes, I know about the analog I/O which I intend to fully take advantage
of:-) I didn't understand exactly what SPDIF was. I had an idea it was in
the realm of digital, but I didn't know if you needed an additional
converter like you do for the ADAT optic signals.
I originally used the wrong word "converter". What I meant to say was
adapter. Like the kind you buy to adapt a RCA cable to a quarter inch imput.
I didn't know if I could run a cable out of the SPDIF and put an adapter at
the other end to make it a quarter inch plug and use it as additional in's
and outs. I really have never come into cantact with SPDIF before. It's a
pretty stupid question I know. I just had no clue.

What connects to this format? Thanks!! --Roger

Ok, that confused me.
You can make the SPDIF on your multiface an AES/EBU with an adapter, but
it'll still be digital of course.

SPDIF? Lots of things actually. From some better consumer CD players to
some synths to some FX devices to... it could be anything.
After hearing your question, you'll most likely want to know more about
digital clock as well. When connecting things, you need 1 digital clock.
This can be the CD player or the Hammerfall or anything else, but always
keep in mind that you can only have 1 master clock and the others should
be slave, otherwise you might have clicks or phase problems. The leds on
the multiface will show you when clock is correct, as well as the driver
settings box.

Bye,
Joeri
